Dear Senate President Berkman -
We are writing as ASUO representatives on the UO Senate to give notice of a motion for consideration by the UO Senate at the February 24 meeting. The motion will call on the UO Senate to:
1) Support the decision by the ASUO Athletics and Contracts Finance Committee to terminate the contract with UO Athletics and redirect this student fee money to basic needs programs,
2) Support the decision by the ASUO Senate to reject the proposal from the UO Administration to send a portion of the money ASUO has saved as a result of not paying for tickets during the pandemic to UO Athletics,
3) Stand with ASUO Senate and the Athletics and Contracts Finance Committee in opposing a new mandatory Athletics fee on students for tickets,
4) Call on President Schill to work with UO Athletics to provide adequate funding for student tickets from the athletic department's other sources of funds, such as media contracts, NCAA tournament payments, donors, etc.
We would like to work with the Senate Executive Committee on the exact language.
Because the UO Board of Trustees will be meeting March 8-9 to approve tuition increases and fees such as the fee President Schill has proposed for athletics, it is important that this motion come to the UO Senate at the February 24 meeting.
Sincerely,
Jenna Travers, ASUO Senate Seat 08, ACFC
Annika Mayne, ASUO Senate Seat 07, ACFC Chair
Raul Patel, ASUO Senate Seat 18, Physical and Computer Sciences
Irisa Mehta, ASUO Senate Seat 05, EMU Board, Ombudsperson
Ella Meloy, ASUO Senate Seat 02, PFC, Treasurer
