Our Goals and Priorities

Each year, Disability Rights Oregon surveys our community members for what issues are most important. Based on your input, the Board of Directors and Mental Health Advisory Council work with staff to determine what issues will be prioritized in the year ahead. We prioritize issues that will have the greatest impact on the lives of the greatest number of Oregonians.

As of today, our priorities include:
·         Ensuring people with disabilities are free from abuse and neglect in schools, institutions, hospitals, jails, prisons, and other facilities across the state.
·         Advocating for community-based supports, housing, and healthcare (including mental health care), as well as accessibility of sidewalks, crosswalks, and public transit.
·         Providing training, tools, and education around disability laws so people can advocate for themselves.
·         Ensuring students with disabilities receive proper behavioral supports to attend full days at school.
·         Decriminalizing disability via diversion programs for people with mental illness before they enter the criminal justice system.
·         Conducting targeted outreach and providing specialized services for Veterans with traumatic brain injuries.
