Dear Heidi,

Happy Disability Pride Month! July marks the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the landmark law that protects our community from discrimination and was made possible by people with disabilities pushing for changes we needed to see in our laws. While we honor our past leaders, we’re celebrating this year’s anniversary with an exciting opportunity to develop tomorrow’s advocacy champions: Oregon Partners in Policymaking® Leadership Series is returning this September<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/default.salsalabs.org/Te7e66ab1-12f5-4035-9263-9fc65694c1e9/6a0ed977-5dd8-4ada-a810-9e5b0f874207__;!!C5qS4YX3!CpsVcZnyOYcTCxBRv57clieHt3-4qb4i3RkzM44mxE7BMdhK9QaoxZNk1ClV8toxX3bEME3gt_komogI$>, thanks to generous funding from the Fairview Trust!

People with disabilities have been fighting for our fundamental rights to live, work, and play in society—like everyone else—for decades, and the next wave of disability advocates will be just as key to creating a world in which our community truly belongs. That’s where this new training comes in.

About the Leadership Series

Created more than 35 years ago, Oregon Partners in Policymaking® Leadership Series is an internationally renowned program based on the belief that the most effective and enduring public policy decisions come from partnerships between people who need and use services and supports, and elected officials and other decisionmakers. It is about becoming confident in oneself, competent in knowledge and information received, and comfortable with sharing life experiences and expertise.

Who Should Apply?

Oregon Partners in Policymaking® Leadership Series is a leadership training program designed for:
· Parents, guardians, or family members of school-aged children with a developmental disability, traumatic brain injury, or other lifelong disability that affects their daily life; and,
· Adults 21-years-old and older with a disability that affects their daily life. This includes intellectual or developmental disability, traumatic brain injury, or other lifelong disabilities that affect daily life.

While attending eight in-person, weekend sessions over eight months, participants will learn leadership skills and how to develop positive partnerships and working relationships with elected officials and other policymakers. Series graduates often become members of boards, councils, task forces and advisory committees, while some run for elected office, and others secure employment in disability advocacy or service organizations.

Thank you for helping us spread the word about this exciting opportunity to develop our movement’s future leadership. When President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act on July 26, 1990, it was the culmination of decades of grassroots advocacy by people with disabilities, families, and allies. What might seem inevitable today was only possible because our community pushed for changes.

Please join me in imagining what the next generation of disability advocacy leaders can accomplish over the next 34 years and read on for numerous ways you can get involved today. Together we will make our dreams reality!

📣 We Need Your Feedback

· Attention Current and Former Foster Youth: We recently reached a settlement in our class action foster care case, Wyatt B v Kotek, and the State has agreed to transform the system for thousands of children and teens in its care! Now it's time for youth who have experienced foster care in Oregon—including young adults who have “aged out” since we filed the case in 2019—to tell the court by August 16, 2024, if they think the settlement is fair. · Is Your Child Losing In-Home Care Hours? Disability Rights Oregon is currently monitoring the Oregon Needs Assessment, a recently unveiled formula the State uses to calculate how many hours children and adults with disabilities need to live in their homes. We know in-home care support is critical to keeping people with disabilities out of institutions, and we will not go backwards! To be clear, DRO has never signed off on or endorsed the Oregon Needs Assessment. Our attorneys, in fact, objected to many of its elements and are currently working to cease the state’s misleading and untruthful statements. We’re also gathering data and stories from impacted individuals and families, and creating a toolkit to help you navigate the exceptions process.
