From the CEO
"All around the world, women with disabilities are making bold changes and demanding their rights. They demand to have leadership roles in their communities, in their countries, and on a global scale. Over 20 years ago, many of us disabled women from many different countries were in Beijing for the women's conference, and we have seen some of the progress that we've made since."

What are the experiences during a MIUSA exchange program that influence activists to make a change at home? To answer this, MIUSA alumni from Pakistan produced the "The Pakistan Disability Act," a documentary that follows MIUSA’s U.S./Pakistan Disability Policy Professional Exchange which took place in April 2017 in Eugene, Oregon and Berkeley, California.
The program brought together an influential group of disability rights leaders, policy makers, and parliamentarians to learn from the U.S. experience and develop practical strategies for implementing disability rights laws and policies in Pakistan. The collaboration of key stakeholders through this exchange has accelerated progress toward passage of the first national-level disability rights bill in Pakistan. Continuing the momentum sparked by the RightsNow! training in Kenya, Jane Kihungi from Women Challenged to Challenge (WCC) leads the charge on eliminating violence against women and girls with disabilities in Kenya. WCC organized legal clinics with women with disabilities and the legal community which resulted in a new coalition advocating with government in eight counties. Jane had this to say about her lessons learned:
“Having attended a training workshop on effective advocacy organized through the RightsNow! project, I learned the importance of identifying my key targets and allies and preparing in advance. Gender-based violence cannot be eliminated by a one-sided approach. Networking and forming a coalition with people or organizations sharing the same idea is of paramount importance to amplifying our impact.” Read more about Jane's strategy<https://list-manage.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d39e81314218b930d5315426a&id=7c9b3844b5&e=37466117e1> on the RightsNow! resource center.

Maegan, who is passionate about equal access to education for the deaf community and youth with disabilities, left students with this piece of advice to take home: "When you go back to your countries, make sure you are working with people with disabilities, side by side." Armenia’s Coalition for Legal Reform takes Action<https://list-manage.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d39e81314218b930d5315426a&id=1ac16de034&e=37466117e1>
Over the past couple months, four committees of the Coalition for Legal Reform have been implementing their coordinated activities to push and advocate for amendments to, and adoption of the draft disability law that is currently in Parliament. Led by AGATE, with technical support from MIUSA, U.S. experts and Armenian experts, actions underway have included meetings with Armenia’s Ombudsman, representatives from the various political parties and members of the Standing Committee, including a Member of Parliament who was the former Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Social Affairs and who has been the champion in developing the draft law and promoting its adoption.
As an outcome of their efforts, the Standing Committee members unanimously voted to move the draft law ahead, including the amendments proposed by the Coalition. Alumni Spotlight: Hannah Chadwick
Hannah Chadwick is a MIUSA alumna twice-over: 10 years after participating in a U.S.-Bahrain youth exchange, she was selected for MIUSA’s first WILD program to take place in the United States. There in the Bay Area, where she lives, she reunited with one of her fellow Bahrain program alumni and met many more vibrant women with disabilities. The experience contributed to her decision to accept a job with US Business Leadership Network (USBLN), a national non-profit where she works to, among other things, connect college students and recent grads with disabilities to career opportunities:
“I didn’t expect to be working in the disability space after I graduated, but after the networking opportunities I had in the WILD program and meeting leaders dedicated to disability inclusion, I changed my mind. I think my job is a good opportunity to make a huge difference for people with disabilities.”
Hannah has also been active in advancing MIUSA’s efforts to encourage people with disabilities to participate in international exchange. In 2017, she presented at the Generation Study Abroad summit and the San Francisco’s Lighthouse for the Blind to discuss her experiences studying abroad in China<https://list-manage.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d39e81314218b930d5315426a&id=838f2776c3&e=37466117e1> as a blind traveler. No doubt MIUSA and Hannah will continue to join forces!
