January 2018
From the CEO
Sometimes change takes a long time. It reminds me of an ocean wave slowly reaching its peak and then thundering down to the shore.

I'm not a patient person when it comes to implementing change to advance the rights of person with disabilities. But recently I am experiencing a new sense of camaraderie among leaders in the international development field. Many are demonstrating their commitment to inclusive development by joining MIUSA's latest initiative, Excellence in Development and Disability Inclusion (EDDI).

EDDI will enable MIUSA to utilize the power of our networks, connecting international development leaders with MIUSA alumni in over 135 countries and other disability rights leaders globally.

I believe a new wave of activism has finally arrived, and I'm excited to see who's riding it.

Susan Sygall
CEO, Mobility International

"It's important to encourage girls and young women with disabilities to think about going into foreign policy. It's not until more disabled women are in those high-level leadership positions that we will actually see some real change."

MIUSA CEO Susan Sygall hopes that sharing her own global experiences - from studying and hitch-hiking in her wheelchair to co-founding a non-profit advancing global disability leadership - will show what's possible. Read her interview with Women in Foreign Policy to understand her vision for furthering disabled women's leadership and agency. This month we traveled to NYC to host a one-day orientation for a high-school semester exchange student from Malaysia who is blind. The student learned about U.S. disability culture and rights, visited a non-profit community center, and had a "touch tour" of the Intrepid Museum. Over the next two months we’ll present during not one, not two, but three Civic Education Weeks in Washington DC! We’re also developing tip sheets and stories to put on the “youngest” section of our website devoted to US Department of State youth exchanges. Explore the new Youth Exchange page here.<https://list-manage.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d39e81314218b930d5315426a&id=aeaf515c77&e=37466117e1>

Building on the success of the RightsNow! Project, MIUSA once again joins forces with MIUSA alumni in Armenia on a project to spur legal reform. Karine Grigoryan, MIUSA alumna and Executive Director of the Armenia-based AGATE Defense Center for Women with Disabilities, says that there is great momentum to drive the project forward.

“For the first time, human rights leaders from all over Armenia have joined together in the Coalition for Inclusive Legal Reforms to advocate for the adoption of the human rights based disability law. I do believe that during this year all of us will be able to celebrate the achievement of our goal.” Read about MIUSA's role.<https://list-manage.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d39e81314218b930d5315426a&id=907af750a6&e=37466117e1>

A strong sense of curiosity about the world led Tijani Bukari, a Deaf student from Ghana, to participate in the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. As part of the program, Tijani joined other YES students who are Deaf or have disabilities for a MIUSA workshop that addressed topics such as disability rights, self-advocacy, and community service. “Studying in the United States was a wonderful opportunity for me, opening my eyes and my mind to the world – a new world l never knew existed.”

Since his time in the U.S., Tijani continues to be an advocate for disability rights.
