The elections are over. We hope you voted. Voting is how people can participate, be included and be heard in our towns, cities, state and nation.
Your candidates and issues may have won or lost. Most people will have experienced a combination of winning and losing. It is good to learn how to win and how to lose. These experiences are part of interacting with the world. Sometimes we win, sometimes we don’t. What we learn is how to go forward, regardless.
This is where core values come in. DRO is based upon the values of inclusion, self-determination and full participation. Our three word motto is: Opportunity, Access, Choice. We will continue to be true to those values.
Our goal in the sheltered workshop case<http://disabilityrightsoregon.us3.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=df75f5fb9cfd9d242e8e630d9&id=fb3cb014ab&e=5cc5acae11> is to give people the chance to live in the world with a job, an income, a place to live in communities that are more open to exploration.
Our goal in the curb cut case<http://disabilityrightsoregon.us3.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=df75f5fb9cfd9d242e8e630d9&id=fbbd5a042b&e=5cc5acae11> is to give people the chance to live in their cities and towns: to go to work, to stores, to see friends and enjoy their world. It is based upon the simple notion that everyone should be able to safely cross a street.
The recent elections will most likely result in cuts in funding for what we do and the other services our community rely upon. We will probably come to you more often asking for your support. Yes, support for DRO but, much more importantly, support for the values that drive our work. Together, we can continue to make Oregon a more open, accessible and fair place to pursue a full life.
We are beginning by asking you to let us know what you think of your voting experience and how we can make it better. We want your voice to be heard.
Self Advocates Becoming Empowered and partners across the country are asking for voters with disabilities to tell us about your experience when you voted<http://disabilityrightsoregon.us3.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=df75f5fb9cfd9d242e8e630d9&id=d9705e817f&e=5cc5acae11>. Please help us learn about any barriers you experienced so that we can work to improve the accessibility of elections. We have a goal of collecting 100 responses in Oregon.
The Help America Vote Act (HAVA) was passed to make sure everyone in this country could cast a private and independent vote. Now, we want to make sure the law is working. You can help by completing this survey.
Just as it is important to know that YOUR VOTE COUNTS, we need to know that you have the accessibility you need to MAKE IT COUNT.
If you voted and have a disability, please respond to the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2016VoterExperienceSurvey<http://disabilityrightsoregon.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=df75f5fb9cfd9d242e8e630d9&id=76a6699fb1&e=5cc5acae11>
Sincerely,
Bob Joondeph
