Subject: Specialized Dance Education Training Coming to Eugene
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 17th, 2016
Good till June 11, 2016
Eugene, Oregon – DanceAbility International is a nonprofit that unites people with and without disabilities through dance and movement. The DanceAbility method is internationally acclaimed for its achievements in reducing prejudice and increasing diversity in the field of dance. In June, Artistic Director Alito Alessi is leading a teacher orientation training in Eugene, Oregon that is co-sponsored by the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. This is the first time he is offering this five-day training in Eugene.
DanceAbility International programming encompasses all people, across disabilities, race and gender. It respects each individual as an equal and as a result, people’s tendency to identify each other primarily as disabled or not dissolves. The five-day DanceAbility Teacher Orientation course will be held Monday, June 13th till Friday, June 17th, 2016, at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon campus. The course equips participants with the skills to teach dance and movement to groups that integrate people across the full spectrum of abilities and disabilities. Participants learn how to create a foundation of equality and respect among students while building connections and community through dance.
Alessi, DanceAbility method founder, began exploring mixed-abilities dance in the late 1980’s. If a person with a disability has participated in dance in Oregon, chances are very good that they were taught or strongly influenced by Alessi’s pioneering work. He has trained over 500 teachers worldwide in the DanceAbility method, and has reached tens of thousands of individuals in Oregon and in over 25 countries through performances and educational programming. He was awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship for his contributions to increasing diversity in dance. In addition, DanceAbility International was recently featured on OPB’s Oregon Art Beat television program for its innovative work.
“DanceAbility is the art of being together and then seeing what should manifest if we actually are really and honestly a reflection of society all working together,” Alessi expresses.
The Teacher Orientation course is supported in part by grants from the Oregon Community Foundation, Oregon Cultural Trust, and Wheeler Foundation. Reduced-tuition scholarships are offered, especially to those outside the I-5 corridor. To apply, please contact Kathryn at danceability.com<mailto:Kathryn at danceability.com>.
