Film Details

Afternoon of a Faun tells the story of Tanaquil Le Clercq. She was a muse to both George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, who both loved her, as a dancer and romantically. Balanchine and her were married and Robbins created his famous Afternoon of a Faun for Tanny. She was the foremost dancer of her day. Then at age 27, Tanny contracted polio and her legs were paralyzed. Though she never performed again, she went on to teach at Dance Theatre of Harlem. She was a strong woman emboldened by inner strength and love of life. The director said: “Dancers learn to live in the moment; they know their careers will not last long. Tanny's resiliency is a product of her life as a dancer and the enduring power of the human spirit."
