Hurricane Harvey continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico, as of August 25th causing delays, cancellations, and damage along the Texas coast

Summary

Hurricane Harvey continues to track northwestward across the Gulf of Mexico. As of 1pm CST today, the center of circulation was approximately 335 km (210 miles) southeast of Corpus Christi, Texas. Forecast models indicate that Harvey will continue to strengthen, and could become a major (Category 3) hurricane before it comes onshore between Port Aransas and Port Lavaca, Texas, in the early morning hours of August 26th. After making landfall, the system will likely stall and weaken near the Texas Gulf Coast through at least August 29th.

Weather Impacts

Harvey will likely bring life-threating weather conditions to much of southeastern Texas and southern Louisiana through August 29th. Tropical storm-force winds are forecast to arrive in the hurricane warning area by August 25th, with hurricane-force winds likely by the evening hours. Category 3 hurricanes can cause extensive damage to buildings; many trees will be damaged or uprooted. Widespread power and utility outages are almost certain in southeastern Texas, which could persist for several days after landfall. Areas affected include, but are not limited to: Houston, Austin, San Antonio, College Station, Corpus Christi, among others. While Hurricane Harvey is still a Category 2 hurricane, it is on track to strengthen to Category 3, with winds of at least 111 mph by the time of landfall around Corpus Christi.
