Hi Prevention Science Students,
Welcome back to winter term! Since one of your teaching requirement options requires a public presentation in the community, I'm wondering if any of you would be interested in the opportunity below. Please let me know by Wednesday if you are interested.
Best,
Jen

Hello,
We have an opportunity to provide an interactive session to two different small groups of 8th grade students. This is totally optional. Please review the material below and let me know by Wednesday, Dec. 10 if your program might be interested.

Subject: UO's College Readiness Program: Academic Sessions during Group Visits (March 2026)
Hello Lisa,
UO’s College Readiness Program focuses on low-income, multicultural, first-generation youth from the Portland/Beaverton area, aiming to inspire students to continue their education after high school. We work specifically with transitional grades (5th & 8thgrade) in school as we teach monthly college-readiness lessons, hosted a specialized University of Oregon experience, and establish family/supporter touchpoints.
The UO experience for 8th grader is a specialized campus visit, where they receive an information session, lunch at Carson Dining, campus tour focused on student life, athletic tours, interactive academic sessions, time at the Duck Store, and a student panel. These 8thgrade visits will happen on Thursday, March 12 (Faubion School) and Wednesday, March 18, 2026 (George MS).
I am hoping your department would be interested in providing an INTERACTIVE academic session for 8th graders. In the last two years, here are some examples:
· Business - Sport Business presentation
· SOMD - Jazz combo rehearsal or Repertoire Singers choral group rehearsal
· STEM - Chemistry lab
· SOJC – Storytelling/ Story Board Activity
Additional context for the day:
* Students will start hearing about the UO group visit in August 2025 during back-to-school night and once lessons begin in October. About 1-2 months before the group visit, students will fill out a academic ranking form to share out of the 3 confirmed sessions what are they the most interested into the least interested in. In the last two years, nearly all students have received their first choice. Prior to this field trip, they will have received college-readiness lessons such as collegeand career exploration, higher education terminology, admissions, and high school goal setting. After the group visit they will have one remaining lesson on financial aid & scholarships.
I have not received final enrollment numbers from Faubion or George Middle School, but plan to get it soon. However, here are my expectation per day:
* On Thursday, March 12, Faubion School will probably have no more than 90 people. Keep in mind, this will be divided across 3 academic sessions so you will have about 30 people (including chaperones). Based on the tentative itinerary for next year, the academic session would happen from 2:00 – 2:45 pm (45 minutes).
* On Wednesday, March 18, George MS will have no more than 145 people. The tentative itinerary has this school split into two tracks with the academic session from 1:15 – 2:00 pm and 2:00 – 2:45 pm with about 25-40 people (including chaperones) per academic session.
Would you be willing to partner with the College Readiness Program to provide academic sessions on March 12th & 18th?
Please let me know by Friday, December 12 if your department can provide an academic session on March 12th & 18th. If so, I will set up a meeting towards the end of Fall term/early Winter term to discuss this partnership and hear your creative interactive activities ideas.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
