Dear Prev Sci students,
I am passing along a note from Dr. Benedict McWhirter and a link from Dr. Krista Chronister regarding the increase in hate crimes against Asians and Asian Americans. I found their emails very impactful. As a prevention science community, we stand against racism, discrimination, and hate crimes. Please connect with others to discuss, listen, support, and learn. The path to being a strong ally and a change maker is lifelong, and a prevention science voice in this conversation and societal change is essential.
Thinking of you all,
Leslie

Good morning student, faculty, and staff colleagues.
First, thank you Krista for sending the link, below, again and for all your continued work to keep our academic community informed. I am responding to the CPSY community here and all faculty and staff in our department who work with and interact with our CPSY students.
The additional violence that occurred yesterday against Asians and Asian Americans in Atlanta, on the heels of many other incidents against Asians and Asian Americans throughout the US, continues to create fear and insecurity among many throughout the country, and in particular, among many of you in our own small academic community.
I want you all to know that we see you and recognize this is happening, and while many of us cannot know what it is like to be in your skin, many in our community can and do. I share the concern and indignation of everyone in our community. And I ask all of us to continue to reach out to each other, to continue to offer support, love, listening ears, and virtual embraces and acknowledgements in the days and weeks ahead. Spring break is a time for renewal and, hopefully, disconnecting from everything that causes us stress...even for a short time. I hope that along with disconnecting from stress in the next week, we also re-connect with each other, reach out, talk, and share mutual support that is critical right now, especially for those more vulnerable and those who feel most vulnerable in our small community.
Thinking of all of you with admiration for your concern for others and for your values and acts of solidarity, each and every day.
Benedict

Dear CPSY students:
For those of you who want to keep current with the drastic rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans, please remember that Dr. Karen Suyemoto is speaking today at 12pm PST (webinar link sent in previous email) and you can watch a good 10-minute story about hate crimes in Oakland, CA that was featured on the PBS Newshour last night.
Thank you for continuing to reach out to your colleagues and their families most affected by these crimes, especially the increased fear to go out alone, travel, go to work, and more.
Krista
Asian American community battles surge in hate crimes stirred from COVID-19
with Stephanie Sy March 16, 2021 OPB Newshour
As the U.S. continues its battle against COVID-19, it is also battling a rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans. A recent report found that hate crimes against Asian Americans in major U.S. cities surged by nearly 150 percent in 2020 —even as the number of overall hate crimes fell. Stephanie Sy looks at how the violence has marred one community, and how they are coming together in its wake.
