Hello PREV students,
I am writing after this very distressing day in American history with hope that now more than ever you will take what you learn from the prevention science program and from your own life experiences to condemn violence and consider ways in which each of us can promote a society that can engage in difficult conversations and have differences of opinion without resorting to destruction, disrespect and violence. That the rioters in DC today were treated quite differently than the Black Lives Matter protestors in DC just 7-8 months ago speaks to the systematic racism embedded in our society.
The events of today are an unsettling way to start winter term, particularly in our remote Zoom classroom environment and while physically distancing from those outside of the household “pod.” If you are finding it difficult to concentrate, you are not alone. Please reach out to me, your advisor, or other faculty or fellow students in the program if it would be helpful in these stressful times. If you are feeling able to support others, please reach out to your fellow students/peers to see if they need anything. We are a community in this program and department and are here for each other!
With respect for the hard work each of you is engaged in, in both small and big ways,
Leslie

The University of Oregon is located on Kalapuya Ilihi, the traditional indigenous homeland of the Kalapuya people. Today, descendants are citizens of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians of Oregon, and they continue to make important contributions in their communities, at UO, and across the land we now refer to as Oregon.
