[Prevscilist] Welcoming Prevention Science students to Fall 2020!

Greetings continuing and incoming Prevention Science students!

Fall has officially arrived and we are really looking forward to “seeing” everyone in just a few days. I am writing in my capacity as the prevention science program director for the 2020-2021 academic year. And wow, what a year it’s been so far. I hope that this email finds every one of you, and your loved ones, healthy and safe. Some of you may have experienced loss of a loved one this year, or experienced stress from the pandemic, racial injustices, natural disasters, or other major life events. Some may have discovered new activities in the outdoors/nature to enjoy, or found yourself in a living situation you had not envisioned just 7 months ago. No matter how 2020 has been for you thus far—you are a welcomed and critical part of the prevention science family at UO. We will work together this fall and beyond to build upon our culture of respect, understanding, and kindness as we navigate the “Zoom” world for our instructional activities, and support each other to meet our prevention science learning objectives.

And now for some orientation details, please read the notes below carefully.

First, I want to officially welcome all incoming students - we are delighted you are joining our program! I have listed the names of all incoming students at the bottom of this email.

Second, all students—continuing and new—we are trying to get a sense of who is planning to live in and around the Eugene area this fall term, and who is planning to complete fall term from a remote location. This will help us plan possible activities to build connections among all of us. To this end, Danette Robertson, our Academic Program Coordinator (prevsci at uoregon.edu<mailto:prevsci at uoregon.edu>) created a very short (4 questions) survey for you. Third, all students—you may find the attached “Explore Eugene” document useful for learning about the basics and things to do in and around the region. A special thanks to Associate Program Director Dr. Anne Mauricio for updating this document with notes about items that are temporarily affected by COVID-19 restrictions or by the Oregon fires. Anne and her family relocated to Eugene to join the College of Education and Prevention Science Institute this summer, so she knows first-hand about moving to Eugene during this unprecedented time and has some great tips. New students will meet Anne in the orientation on Thursday.

Fourth, incoming students – there are a number of College of Education orientation activities scheduled for you on Thursday and Friday. You have likely seen some emails about these already. We are grateful to our Academic Outreach specialist Samantha Bullis for creating the attached ‘cheat sheet’ with all the Zoom links you will need Thursday and Friday.
