Hello colleagues,
The Center on Parenting and Opioids, a NIDA-funded collaborative center housed across OHSU, PSI, and CTN, is soliciting proposals to fund training and career development related to the Center Aims (attached). This call is for training opportunities that will take place in the Spring and Summer, 2020. Applications are due on March 6. See below for details, and please circulate this announcement to relevant colleagues. Thanks,
Leslie
Request for Training Proposals: Center on Parenting and Opioids Training Funds
The NIDA P50 Center for Excellence, "Center on Parenting and Opioids” (CPO) reques proposals to fund training opportunities that occur in the spring and summer of 2020. The Pilot & Training Core of the CPO seeks to support researchers at all career stages in seeking training opportunities that are aligned with the Center priorities.
This grant year, we have a pool of about $30,000 available for training-related activities, broadly construed. These activities include but are not limited support for: travel to trainings and workshops; developing and hosting workshops at UO; building and running webinars on topics related to the Center Aims; and various additional training materials and tools. The Pilot & Training Core will use some of these funds to host local training events and disseminate training documents and materials. The balance of the funds each year will be distributed to trainees, Center Scientists, colleagues, and collaborators to be used for training and career development directly related to the Center Aims.
Funding Priorities
Applications will be reviewed with respect to their fit with the following priorities:
1. Fit of the Proposed Training Opportunity with the Needs of the Trainee. Proposers are encouraged to describe how the proposed training opportunity aligns with their training goals and/or addresses gaps in their or others career development plan. Training proposals will be evaluated in light of how well the opportunity meets the current needs of the trainee. As a general principle, the funds are intended to support targeted training in particular research areas and/or methodologies (e.g., workshops). However, applications for other high-leverage career development opportunities (e.g., present a talk at a conference) will also be eligible for funding.
2. Alignment with overall Center Aims. Training opportunities that are more closely aligned with the Center Aims will take priority for funding. We will include a list of example training opportunities that align with the Center Aims in each call for applications.
3. Availability of Funds. Applicants who do not have access to alternative funds to support the training opportunity will take priority over applications from individuals with alternative financial resources to support the training.
4. Equity. We will strive for long-running equity across the units affiliated with the Center. Concretely, proposers from units who have received relatively less training support from this mechanism will take priority over proposers from units that have received relatively more training support (or more recent training support).
5. Diversity. Priority will go to proposers who are members of under-represented groups.
Review Procedure
The Pilot & Training Core will solicit applications for training funds approximately one month before the start of each UO academic term. Applications will be reviewed in a timely manner by the Pilot & Training Review Committee (Berkman, Seeley, Seghete, Skowron). The Pilot & Training Core Review Committee will review applications for training funds each term, weighing the priorities listed above. Final allocations will be made by the Steering Committee on a term-by-term basis. There is no pre-determined number of applications that will be supported each term. In making decisions, the Steering Committee will review the recommendations from the Review Committee and weigh the availability of funds each quarter with respect to other Pilot & Training Core investments, the number and quality of applications, and other funds available locally for P50-related opportunities. Proposals will be accepted only for upcoming training opportunities (i.e., no retrospective reimbursement for past trainings will be accepted).
Applications for training funds should be submitted via web form<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/app.smartsheet.com/b/form/c2c0ae0830674029b94532c1854d5c51__;!!C5qS4YX3!WSPCImO8oGedNoVL5nufT_YCYTMyoqNX393R4Pcw-jO8c2HOclN728XvQRmM7B8$> to the Pilot & Training Core Lead (Berkman) in response to the quarterly solicitation. Applications include:
• A training opportunity title
• A brief description (~250 words) of the request emphasizing the five priorities listed above.
• A brief description of how the knowledge gained will be brought back to the Center and contribute to the training of others.
• A timeline for when the training will occur.
• An itemized proposed budget and total budget.
• A CV from the proposer.
Due Date
Applications for training funds for next term are due Friday, March 6 by 5pm. Funding decisions will be made in a timely manner after review. Please direct any questions you have to Elliot (berkman at uoregon.edu<mailto:berkman at uoregon.edu>).
Potential Training Opportunities
Below is a running list of training opportunities that are consistent with the overall Aims of the Center. We encourage proposals to support attendance at these and similar workshops and conferences.

Workshop information
A just-in-time adaptive intervention (JITAI)<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001x7F-Qzud23-jwzRrUcVwhhymC8svp85gn0s4B_55NuCMexcZgz4uwV97q4AJ4yTiv_TmockpO0z8IxHSI1JTttbvUIJd-AolvhuCoAgx-0BiB-41yayEPf98vklr5IsBYty6Plvw8EQ9vbxmkdbkPnZykwZ3qvsg0T4P09NY2igw8vgZuwYURQ==&c=Hvv0vY1rYcsLym_tuEsSgFDkBiVjGGWK0aX_tHSkWAItKTacp8uxcw==&ch=TFCz3mnDUEVeB9c1EMR0WidHxRl4zZ_CqbQUCrcMQ5yGIEZ_oNIEvQ==__;!!C5qS4YX3!Tcq6MfJ3Z-oacDf5J6oRaYB32cE2XT3lV0nySM72kUHkBYuRb38hvno80k_cwSw$> is an emerging mobile health intervention design aiming to provide support “just-in-time”, namely, whenever and wherever support is needed. A JITAI does this via adaptation. The JITAI employs wearable sensors and other approaches to data collection to monitor ongoing information on the dynamics of an individual’s emotional, social, physical and contextual states. The adaptation occurs when this information is used to individualize the type and delivery timing of support. The adaptation in a JITAI is intended to ensure that the right type of support is provided whenever the person is (a) vulnerable and/or is in a state of opportunity, and (b) receptive, namely, able and willing to receive, process and utilize the support provided.
We will introduce the micro-randomized trial (MRT)<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001x7F-Qzud23-jwzRrUcVwhhymC8svp85gn0s4B_55NuCMexcZgz4uwV97q4AJ4yTi7f-KLUFmhaoAck45WCHGPkI1NaI6reezZDQVnSdaeUuZvIVh0R-M67qbEm5NRvIxppZQZ_Q5crShyadCquVfGgx3coOkREroT1O6th_y0TJAe2UC11XaoFmetCjVoAInAPBoO9JUVIo=&c=Hvv0vY1rYcsLym_tuEsSgFDkBiVjGGWK0aX_tHSkWAItKTacp8uxcw==&ch=TFCz3mnDUEVeB9c1EMR0WidHxRl4zZ_CqbQUCrcMQ5yGIEZ_oNIEvQ==__;!!C5qS4YX3!Tcq6MfJ3Z-oacDf5J6oRaYB32cE2XT3lV0nySM72kUHkBYuRb38hvno88AY1rl4$>, a new trial design useful for addressing scientific questions concerning the construction of highly-effective JITAIs. We will provide an introduction to JITAIs, as well as examples of key scientific questions that need to be addressed in the development of these interventions. We will discuss MRTs and how they can be used to answer these scientific questions. Useful primary aim data analysis methods for MRTs will also be discussed.
The emphasis of this workshop is on JITAI and MRT design considerations and applications. Most of Day 1 and some of Day 2 focus on this. On Day 2, much of the time will be allotted to understanding primary aims in an MRT and conducting associated primary aim analyses.
