Winter Teaching Intensive Workshop

The First Day<https://uoregon.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f08876024d7ae1834f7bb294c&id=f9753da94b&e=13630dbf55>
Thurs., Jan. 3
11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., Knight Library Proctor 41 Classroom
Lunch served

Let TEP welcome you back for winter term with a lunch and workshop about planning powerful first days of class. We will present ideas for how to be transparent about the big, compelling goals of the class, how to link those goals to students’ goals for their own learning, and how to immediately begin enacting good teaching practice that sets students’ expectations for the term. And we'll make time to practice together in collegial collaboration, helping one another look forward to meeting our students in the days ahead.

This workshop is open to faculty and GE sole instructors.

Core Education Renewal

UO’s New Core Education: Teaching Our Methods of Inquiry; Difference Inequality and Agency; and Global Perspectives Courses

UO is preparing to enact changes to its general education program<https://uoregon.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f08876024d7ae1834f7bb294c&id=35d318b69b&e=13630dbf55>—changes that establish a stronger, coherent “core” by building key skills in writing, critical and creative thinking, and ethical reasoning across courses in the natural and social sciences and humanities. These four skill areas are called “methods of inquiry.”

The UO Senate has withdrawn the current multicultural requirement, replacing it with two more clearly defined categories of courses that ensure students have a chance to use the tools of the disciplines to analyze inequality in the United States and abroad and widen their perspectives to consider global contexts, issues, and cultural production.

We invite faculty to come together to learn about these changes which will take effect in Fall 2019, including the process for course approval based on these changes. Then we will guide participants through small-group brainstorming to develop transparent assignments for each of the four methods of inquiry and for DIA and GP courses. Participants will leave prepared to provide specific references to readings and assignments that address the criteria and outcomes for their areas of inquiry required by the University Committee on Courses for course approval.

This workshop is open to all interested faculty but is especially targeted at faculty who plan to put their courses up for review this academic year.

Enriching Class Discussion Workshops

  *   Strategies for Discussion Leaders<https://uoregon.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f08876024d7ae1834f7bb294c&id=0b7c071a2b&e=13630dbf55>
Wed. Jan. 9
2:00-4:00 p.m., PLC 72
Learn strategies for creating lively and fruitful conversations that help students build critical thinking skills, understand the fundamental questions of the course, and enjoy class time. We will identify the thinking and argumentation skills your students should be practicing, learn common questions and prompts that build these skills, review various discussion activities, and discuss strategies for addressing common problems that arise in class discussions.

  *   Difficult Dialogues<https://uoregon.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f08876024d7ae1834f7bb294c&id=5ec9b5a82a&e=13630dbf55>
Wed., Jan. 23
10:00 a.m.-noon, EMU Lease Crutcher Lewis Room
How do we create course learning communities that are capable of seriously addressing challenging issues together—including race, gender, privilege, and culture? In Advanced Strategies for Discussion Leaders: Difficult Dialogues, TEP will share strategies for developing respect and mutuality in the classroom; we’ll also consider structures that enable students to better discuss sensitive course material. And we’ll actually practice negotiating heated or potentially painful or offensive moments in the classroom.

  * Critical Inquiry and Ethical Dialogue<https://uoregon.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f08876024d7ae1834f7bb294c&id=5b269f8522&e=13630dbf55>
Tues., Feb. 26
3:00-5:00 p.m., EMU Swindells Room
How do we “deepen” classroom inquiry and discussion so that students can sharpen their critical thinking and develop their capacity for ethical dialogue about complex issues? In this workshop we’ll consider scholarship on the use of community inquiry to promote critical thinking and facilitate ethical dialogue. We’ll explore specific strategies and classroom exercises that can help students hone their critical thinking skills and practice ethical reflection and discussion with each other; we’ll also consider ways to assess classroom dialogue and keep students accountable for their learning.

Professional Practice Workshops

  * Making the Most of Midterm Feedback<https://uoregon.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f08876024d7ae1834f7bb294c&id=af2cdecccc&e=13630dbf55>
Pick One Session:
Monday, Feb. 11, 4:00-5:00 p.m., HEDCO 230T
Tuesday, Feb. 12, 3:00-4:00 p.m., HEDCO 230T
How can faculty and graduate student instructors make the most of students’ midterm feedback to enhance students’ awareness of their own learning strategies; convey that student voices matter (even if you’re unable to make course modifications they suggest); reinforce the goals of the course; and help students finish strong?

Come with your own results in hand to think strategically about how to interpret those results, talk about them with your students, and make adjustments that may enhance student learning and contribute to a more rewarding teaching experience.

  *   Writing a Statement of Teaching Philosophy<https://uoregon.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f08876024d7ae1834f7bb294c&id=93d4b12315&e=13630dbf55>
Thurs, Feb 14
1:00-2:30 p.m., PLC 72
A statement of teaching philosophy is a short narrative about your teaching that explains the principles and theories behind it. Teaching statements are often an essential element of job applications for academic positions and for promotion and tenure review. This workshop will review formats and best practices for writing a statement of teaching philosophy. You also will begin the writing process and leave with a draft outline of a teaching statement. Graduate students, newly hired faculty, and adjunct instructors who plan to apply for academic positions may particularly benefit from this workshop

Winter Science Teaching Journal Club Meetings

[Image removed by sender.]The Science Teaching Journal Club invites you to participate in our ninth year of weekly practical gatherings. The Journal Club is a cooperative effort of the Teaching Engagement Program and the Science Literacy Program. Meetings feature lively, structured discussions of books, articles from the science teaching research literature, and periodic small-scale teaching experiments. We welcome participants from all ranks and disciplines to join the whole series or stop by for a specific conversation. This group provides a wonderful space to learn about, discuss and develop new ideas about teaching.

This winter in Journal Club we will read a book: Teaching Undergraduate Science: A Guide to Overcoming Obstacles to Student Learning, by Linda C. Hodges. In each chapter of this very practical and accessible book the author draws on the scholarship of teaching and learning to present strategies for helping students learn in a different situation: in class, from texts, from problems, from tests, etc. We look forward to exploring these topics with you, so please join us!

The book is available as an e-book from the UO library<https://uoregon.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f08876024d7ae1834f7bb294c&id=5b3f204af6&e=13630dbf55> or online as a print book<https://uoregon.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f08876024d7ae1834f7bb294c&id=d3dddf0edc&e=13630dbf55>. We will meet in 217 LISB (Lewis Integrative Sciences Building) at 9:00 a.m. on Thursdays.

A full list of dates and the tentative reading schedule can be found on the TEP website<https://uoregon.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f08876024d7ae1834f7bb294c&id=7a33cd182b&e=13630dbf55>.
