<strong><span style="font-family:"Helvetica",sans-serif">UO’s New Core Education: Teaching Our Methods of Inquiry; Difference Inequality and Agency; and Global Perspectives Courses</span></strong><br>

UO is preparing to enact <a href="https://uoregon.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f08876024d7ae1834f7bb294c&id=35d318b69b&e=13630dbf55" target="_blank"><span style="color:#62A70F">changes to its general education program</span></a>—changes that establish
a stronger, coherent “core” by building key skills in <strong><span style="font-family:"Helvetica",sans-serif">writing, critical and creative thinking, and ethical reasoning
</span></strong>across courses in the natural and social sciences and humanities. These four skill areas are called “methods of inquiry.”<br>

The UO Senate has <strong><span style="font-family:"Helvetica",sans-serif">withdrawn the current multicultural requirement</span></strong>, replacing it with two more clearly defined categories of courses that ensure students have a chance to use the tools
of the disciplines <strong><span style="font-family:"Helvetica",sans-serif">to analyze inequality in the United States and abroad</span></strong> and
<strong><span style="font-family:"Helvetica",sans-serif">widen their perspectives to consider global contexts, issues, and cultural production.

We invite faculty to come together to learn about these changes which will take effect in Fall 2019, including the process for course approval based on these changes. Then we will guide participants through small-group brainstorming to develop transparent assignments
for each of the four methods of inquiry and for DIA and GP courses. Participants will leave prepared to provide specific references to readings and assignments that address the criteria and outcomes for their areas of inquiry required by the University Committee
on Courses for course approval.<br>

A statement of teaching philosophy is a short narrative about your teaching that explains the principles and theories behind it. Teaching statements are often an essential element of job applications for academic positions and for promotion and tenure review.
This workshop will review formats and best practices for writing a statement of teaching philosophy. You also will begin the writing process and leave with a draft outline of a teaching statement. Graduate students, newly hired faculty, and adjunct instructors

Science Teaching Journal Club invites you to participate in our ninth year of weekly practical gatherings. The Journal Club is a cooperative effort of the Teaching Engagement Program and the Science Literacy Program. Meetings feature lively, structured discussions
of books, articles from the science teaching research literature, and periodic small-scale teaching experiments. We welcome participants from all ranks and disciplines to join the whole series or stop by for a specific conversation. This group provides a wonderful
space to learn about, discuss and develop new ideas about teaching.<br>

This winter in Journal Club we will read a book: <em><span style="font-family:"Helvetica",sans-serif">Teaching Undergraduate Science: A Guide to Overcoming Obstacles to Student Learning</span></em>, by Linda C. Hodges. In each chapter of this very practical
and accessible book the author draws on the scholarship of teaching and learning to present strategies for helping students learn in a different situation: in class, from texts, from problems, from tests, etc. We look forward to exploring these topics with
you, so please join us!<br>
