Dear PREV students,

You should have received an email from grad school to complete the graduate student experience survey. Please take the time out to fill out this survey as your responses can help us improve your experience as a graduate student and that of future students.

Thanks in advance,

Atika & Leslie

Subject: grad-dir: grad student experience survey

Dear Grad Heads, Directors, & Coordinators,

Every 3 years, the Graduate School conducts a graduate student experience survey. And yup, you guessed it: 2018 is one of those years!

Your grad students all got the email below asking them to complete the survey. This year, things are slightly different, in that we have joined a consortium of schools to use a professionally developed survey (which is much better than previous in-house attempts and will also help us in nudging students to respond). We were able to customize the survey to ask about items that we at UO uniquely care about, but the bulk of the questions (which will cover topics we previously surveyed and using similar scales) are ones that are being administered at other research-intensive universities, allowing us to see how we stack up. So, your students will be seeing email from "gradSERU" (the Graduate Student Experience In the Research University).

If they - or you - have any questions, please let us in the Graduate School know. Tori Byington (byington at uoregon.edu<mailto:byington at uoregon.edu>) is probably the best person to start with, as she is heading up the data collection and collaboration with gradSERU.

We really do value the data we get from these surveys, as it guides what we do in the Grad School. And in this metric-mad world, having good data matters for other reasons too. Please encourage your students to participate, so our metrics are representative of what our students are experiencing!

thanks,
-Sara

Dear graduate student,

Every 3 years, the UO Graduate School conducts a survey of what our graduate students experience while in graduate school. This survey is important for us to know what parts of that experience are going well, and what aspects could be changed for the better. The survey covers what’s happening on campus, as well as asking questions about your specific program of study and your individual academic experiences. The UO Graduate School takes the survey results seriously in guiding its mission and in deciding where to focus attention and resources.

This year, for the first time, we have joined a consortium of other graduate schools to use a professionally developed survey – the Graduate Student Experience in the Research University (gradSERU). We were still able to customize the survey to include items that are uniquely important to the UO, but by using questions that also appear on other universities’ surveys, we’ll be able to examine how the UO compares to other graduate schools.

I enthusiastically invite you to take the time to complete the gradSERU survey. Without a broad response for you, our graduate students, the survey results are less useful. PLEASE: Help us help you and help future graduate students by completing the survey. Encourage your peers to complete the survey as well – the more responses we get, the better we will know what our priorities should be.

Your responses are confidential and will be reported only in an aggregate form that cannot be linked back to you as an individual.

The survey takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, and can be completed in more than one sitting (so you can take a break and come back to it, if you need to). To make things a bit more fun, all students who take the gradSERU will be entered into a random drawing for one of twenty $50 gift cards to local restaurants (GOOD restaurants – ones our Advisory Board told us were grad student favorites!). In addition, the first 100 students to do the survey will get $5 in “Duck Bucks” (handy money on your UO ID card that you can use for coffee and meals on campus). AND: Two lucky participants will win our drawing for a new I-pad! The survey closes June 15th, 2018 and prize winners will be notified via email no later than June 30, 2018.

On behalf of the Graduate School, I want to thank you in advance for taking time out of your busy schedule to complete this year’s graduate student experience survey and in helping us to strengthen graduate education.
<<Students receive a link to the survey here>>

Sincerely,

Sara D. Hodges, PhD
Interim Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School
