Reminders


*         Student FICA Exemption - Students generally do not have to pay FICA taxes.  FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) refers to taxes for Social Security and Medicare.  Under section 3121(b)(10) of the Internal Revenue Code, a student employee will be exempt from FICA taxes if they are enrolled at least half time.  Half time for undergraduate students is 6 credit hours and for graduate students it is 5 credit hours.  If the academic term begins or ends at any point within a pay period, the entire pay period is eligible for the FICA exemption.  If a student employee falls below half time, then they will begin paying these taxes.  When this occurs, students will see their net paycheck decrease, which may create some confusion.  We encourage departments to explain this to their student employees so they are aware of the policy before they are impacted. *         Twelve Month Pay Option (Deferred Pay) - The Twelve Month Pay Option provides a method for faculty and OA's who are on a 9-month appointment to spread their academic year salary over 12 months.  In order for this to be considered an IRS qualified plan, we have to adhere to strict deadlines.  Law School faculty and OA's have to submit the completed form to the Payroll Office by August 15th.  All other faculty and OA's have until September 15th to submit the completed form to the Payroll Office. We encourage departments to notify their new 9-month faculty and OA's of this program during their on-boarding.

*         Payroll Staffing Update - Holly Cook, our Student Payroll Specialist, is leaving the university to join EWEB as an HR Specialist and her last day is today, August 10th. Thank you for your patience during this transition.
