Also forgot to mention that easycbm.com is still available free for individual teachers with their lite version. Useful for intervention progress monitoring. I think morningside or precision teachers recommend cold progress monitoring reads about once every 1 to 2 weeks usually with aimsweb (hard to access and expensive). So maybe use the helps program for daily or three times per week intervention and then the easycbm for 1 per week or 2 week or per month cold progress monitor. Then norm standardized test for long term progress monitor every 6 months or once per year. Kent Johnson talks about macro, meta and micro progress monitoring in “response to intervention and precision teaching …” That is how you will know if whatever you chose software, or helps or whatever is working or not … saves money in the long run for sure.

Also for general language issues there is not a lot out there for formal class intervention with the exception of direct instruction “language for learning” “language for thinking” “language for writing (narrative)” “reasoning and writing (expository)” which can be expensive but are very good and you can sometimes find on eBay although things are scarce. Maybe “visualizing and verbalizing” might be useful …. But instead spend some time watching fit learning Kim berens YouTube video discussing reading comprehension and language issues. My therapist used language builder cards to implement variations on what she describes. https://youtu.be/zAq6POkSVRI

Also double check if student is language and mouse ready for headsprout. They used to have a “Mousing Around” demo that checked brief language and computer skills but I don’t know where it went. Also engelmann’s low performers manual is a good precursor for readiness into “language for learning.”

>>
>> I highly recommend Headsprout. It’s a bit cheaper (but not much for a year access) if you have to have software. The budget option is to just stick with 100 easy lessons until about halfway and find other readers to supplement without a software solution. Headsprout is totally worth it and very proven …. if the child can handle the work load it is worth it. Hard to know that in advance though.
>>
>> Zigsite.com is still up and useful reading instruction books could be found on eBay most likely … Funnix 2 readers seem to be on eBay. I remember “Direct Instruction Reading” being useful for nuts and bolts. Also “Response to Intervention and Precision Teaching: Creating Synergy in the Classroom.”
>>

>>
>> I remember the Helps Education Fund had some reading materials available for free that might be worth a look. See more at link https://www.helpseducationfund.org/programs-services/helps-one-on-one/

>>
>> Haughton Learning Center stuff with phonological coding and fluency is just very very helpful. Rapid automatic naming is useful too. http://www.haughtonlearningcenter.com/products.html
>>
>> Finally I remember that the boxcar children series were useful for independent readers that were not leveled and were interesting.
