Today my father, Siegfried “Zig” Engelmann, would have been 90 years old.  In
celebration of the 90th anniversary of his birth, we are offering his
memoir, *Teaching Needy Kids in our Backwards System*, for the cost of
shipping (US $5.00) through the end of December.  You can have the book
sent to you, or you can stop by the office of the National Institute for
Direct Instruction (NIFDI) at 805 Lincoln Street in Eugene, Oregon and pick
up a copy during business hours.  (See the recent issue of NIFDI News below
for more information on this give-away.)



I hope that you all will take the time to read the book.  It is
comprehensive and chock-full of his insights and recollections, many of
which can’t be found anywhere else in written form.

times to ensure that students receive the skills and confidence they need
to have productive and fulfilling lives.

Celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Siegfried "Zig" Engelmann’s Birthday
Siegfried “Zig” Engelmann devoted most of his life to bettering the lives
of children by applying his theory of instruction (Direct Instruction) to a
set of instructional programs that are unparalleled in their efficacy with

School Leaders Talk About Partnering with NIFDI
One of the most important steps a school that is starting to implement DI
can take is to contact school leaders who have been successful with
DI.  Through this contact, new DI practitioners can learn from the
experiences of veteran DI practitioners to ensure that their students are
also successful with DI.  Over the course of 25 years, NIFDI has had the
privilege of partnering with schools across the U.S. and in other

video interviews with experienced DI leaders that can help inform new
practitioners about their experiences working with NIFDI.  Over the coming
months, we are releasing some short video interviews (lasting about 10
minutes) with instructional leaders who share their experiences working
with NIFDI and how it has affected their instructional practices and the
performance of their students.

In the first video, Rhonda Richetta, Principal at City Springs
Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore, Maryland, talks about her long
history of partnering with NIFDI. Rhonda started at City Springs as a
teacher, left the school and then returned as the principal. When asked how
NIFDI helped her as an administrator she replied, "The assistance in
looking at the data and making decisions was really valuable. I couldn't
have done it by myself."

The second featured interview is with Sean McKenzie, Director of Student
Support Services at Bethel School District in Spanaway, Washington. NIFDI
has been partnering with the staff at 4 elementary schools to help support
their implementation of Corrective Reading. Sean tells us, "Schools with
NIFDI support have more and better discussions about what they are doing
and how it impacts individual student achievement."

NIFDI Offers In-Person Coaching Academy!

We are happy to announce that we are returning to holding our popular
academies as in-person events! On February 3 and 4, veteran trainer Tamara
Bressi will present Analyzing Data, Classroom Observations & Providing
Feedback. This two-day training at the Doubletree Hotel–Atlanta Airport is
designed for instructional coaches, peer coaches and others responsible for
observing instruction and improving student performance.

Through demonstrations, practice and hands-on activities, participants will
learn how to:

   - Gain meaningful information from lesson progress and in-program
   mastery data.
   - Model how to improve written records.
   - Conduct supportive classroom observations and demonstrations aimed at
   increasing student success.
   - Provide effective oral and written feedback to instructors to directly
   impact student performance.
   - Conduct classroom demonstration, in-class coaching and team teaching.
   - Design and deliver effective, on-going professional development
   sessions.

Paperback Edition of DI Meta-Analysis Available
We are happy to relay that All Students Can Succeed is being released in
