THE ELEPHANT IN THE CLASSROOM

Finally, a book that exposes, from a perspective grounded in the assumptions of natural psychological science, what has barred Siegfried Engelmann’s direct instruction (DI) scripted programs (proven to be the most effective instruction in reading mathematics, and language) from becoming the main instruction in primary education for close to half a century. The bulk of the book is the antidote.

“An Introduction to The Natural Science of Event Based (E-B) Psychology”, is the only applied psychology in total compliance with the assumptions required of the natural sciences. Psychology provides two languages for any system; only one of those languages assumes the qualifying principles of a natural psychological science.

1. The non-labeling language of The Natural Science of Event-Based (E-B) Psychology, grounded the assumptions of the natural sciences

2. The labeling language of the construct based (C-B) psychologies, rooted in religious philosophy.

Engelmann’s language in his scripted programing, which assumes all people think, reason, and learn the same way, is in total congruence with the language of the non-labeling language of E-B psychology. This book clearly outlines the moment to moment thinking reasoning interactive process, experienced between the learner and the DI teacher; a psycholinguistic that illuminates why Engelmann’s ingeniously scripted programs work so successfully in teaching all children to a given standard or higher.
