Dear CPSY Community Members,
I’m grateful for Leslie’s message to our CPHS Community (thank you, Leslie!) and want to echo her sentiments.
Community isn’t something that just happens; it is something we create, sustain, repair, and grow stronger each day. It is the commitment each of us make, repeatedly, to remain in relationship with one another, offering empathy, care, and support, even as uncertainty surrounds our own sense of belonging and we may feel a completely understandable urge to withdraw or isolate.
If you find yourself wanting to withdraw, I hope you will consider, instead, intentionally entering into community in ways that align with your values. For myself, I am choosing to spend today lifting others up (writing letters of recommendation), offering support in the ways that I can, and identifying additional actions within my control that can advance my values of respect, equity, and belonging.
I have blocked out additional hours in my schedule tomorrow (11/7) through next Tuesday<https://outlook.office.com/bookwithme/user/18c9a819662e48698e4df42a155ce37f@uoregon.edu/meetingtype/DJZ34qJPrUGdiKpRqCkafw2?anonymous&ep=mLinkFromTile> to offer support and community for any students who would find meeting with me beneficial. You can reserve a time by clicking on this link<https://outlook.office.com/bookwithme/user/18c9a819662e48698e4df42a155ce37f@uoregon.edu/meetingtype/DJZ34qJPrUGdiKpRqCkafw2?anonymous&ep=mLinkFromTile> (vs. clicking on the one beneath my signature line, which are just my standard office hours).
I am also in my office today (11/6), and folks are welcome to drop-by anytime until 2:00pm, between 2:30-3:00, or between 3:30-4:00 if helpful.
With caring,
Jess

The University of Oregon is located on Kalapuya Ilihi, the traditional indigenous homeland of the Kalapuya people. Today, descendants are citizens of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon, and they continue to make important contributions in their communities, at UO, and across the land we now refer to as Oregon.
I support all students regardless of immigration status or country of origin. As a Dreamer Ally, I support Dreamer students and promote their sense of belonging and safety as they pursue their higher education goals. I commit to not sharing your status with anyone if you reveal it to me, but I also remind you that when interacting with faculty, staff, and offices around campus you are never required to reveal your immigration status. Subject: Community
Good morning CPHS faculty and graduate students,
As we start our day and continue our daily academic routines of classes, research, clinical/field work today, I hope everyone also prioritizes spending time to be in community spaces that support and embrace you this week (and beyond).
On my mind this morning, as is likely on many of yours, is that the upcoming changes in federal government leadership come with some uncertainties. For some of us, that uncertainty may be very personal and scary; for others, the uncertainty may be in relation to our clients or our research agenda and calls upon our skills of empathy, care, and understanding. I do not have answers to the many questions you justifiably will have in the coming days and weeks. I wish that I did! But what I can state, with confidence and pride, is that CPHS is a home, a space, a community that values and respects each and every one of you (and, others outside of our CPHS community). Every single one of you belongs here. We support, value, and honor YOU, and we will remain steadfast to our departmental mission as we carry-on in our day-to-day work. Please take care of yourselves and reach out to those in your community, as you find helpful.
CPHS Mission: The CPHS Department is committed to advancing research and scholarship to improve prevention and intervention practices for children, youth, adults, families, and communities. We are dedicated to training socially aware and culturally responsive clinicians, researchers, and interventionists who engage across ecological levels, utilize evidence-based practices, and, in partnership with their communities, work to reduce inequities and enhance relationships, health, and well-being.
Peace to all,
Leslie, Department Head, CPHS
