Greetings all—
I hope you are all well and staying centered in the midst of the chaos.

Regarding Spring, 2020, practica and externships. Here is the plan:

All practica and externships will move forward this spring term. Go ahead and register if you have an experience all set up (or are enrolled in a required practicum). We fully expect and are planning for the experiences to be modified, but we prefer that you enroll in the credits you need to for these reasons:

  1. you will continue to pursue modified work, like tele-therapy or other measures put into place by your practicum or externship site, and
  2. when things return to “normal” - perhaps toward the end of the term - you will have the structure in place to support your work, supervision, and accrual of clinical hours.

If your externship site has already effectively cancelled their services and/or cancelled your work - then it makes sense to NOT register for externship credits this spring.

If you are concerned about having too much contact, or are concerned that your externship site is not coordinated enough to keep you feeling safe, then by all means you can make the decision to NOT continue your externship experience AFTER you consult with your advisor and you site supervisor about it. Once you make sure your clients are supported, you can make the decision to step away from the externship if you feel you need to.

Remember, you accrue clinical hours over many years. If you cannot work externship or prac hours, or have highly reduced hours by the end of year, remember that (a) this is true for everyone across the US, and (b) that when you apply for your pre-doctoral internship everyone in the country will have lower hours than in past years because of the global pandemic. So, reduced externship hours this spring term will NOT be a problem for you going forward.

Let me know if you have any questions!
Stay well!
Benedict
