Greetings everyone-
I hope the end of the term is going well for all!
Here is an update of CPSY program administrative items that I would like for you to discuss in your DocSem tomorrow or with
your advisor. Consider this a "To-Do" list as well as a "Go-To" list for this spring term. This is a long list - so keep it accessible.
We have all had a LOT of emails regarding spring term courses and administrative issues to track regarding the Coronavirus. If you are like me, you start reading them and then stop and say "this is WAY too long, I will read it later." Sometimes, I don't get back to reading until WAY later-don't do that given the critical nature of the Virus.
I prepared this email to help you think through what to do next term while I am absent as Program Director. Because it is Q and A format, keep this and refer back to it as needed. Discuss tomorrow or save till later. Of course, some of this may change based on the University closures, etc. Just keep reading your emails!
Q. Who do I go to for Program Director signatures?
A. As always, review with your advisor anything you need signed by the program director (program plan, etc.). Once your advisor approves of your document, send it to Danette and COPY your advisor on the email, letting Danette know that the Advisor has approved of your document. Then Danette will affix my signature on the form that needs a training director signature. Faculty get bombarded with information, so make sure to CONFIRM that you may send the document to Danette before sending it.
Please note- some things need Department Head approval - that's Beth - not Program Director approval.
Q. Who will run CPSY meetings this spring?
A. All CPSY faculty. Here is the process:
For Students the process is exactly the same-send topics, concerns, and kudos to your student reps.
For faculty, send your item to Danette. Danette may send out a prompt for this but in any case she will keep a running list of items for discussion. Then, Danette will list items on the agenda. Whichever faculty member presented the topic will run that part of the meeting. There will be one rudder with many pilots! (This perpetuates the myth that we have one rudder!)
Q. Who will manage GE selection and communication?
A. Beth Stormshak, as Department Head, same as in the past. Krista Chronister will support this role given nearly all of our GEs are in FHS. The Strategic Alliance GEs are still in process of approval and you will know soon if and when these are available. SALA could continue to help with information exchange about campus GEs and timelines. For advanced students - always look outside of the department for relevant GEs.
Q. Who will sign off and approve our Externship Evaluations?
A. Jess Cronce. First, turn in Externship evaluation materials to your advisor for Review. Your advisor must review your Externship evaluation and tell you whether (a) it is ready to file, or (b) you need to have a follow-up discussion with your Externship site supervisor before you file your evaluation, or (c) some other action (e.g., if your supervisor has a concern your advisor will want to clear it up before submitting your evaluation to your permanent file). Once Approved by your advisor, turn it in to Jess Cronce with indication of your advisor's approval (hard copy). Then Jess will have the information needed to submit your "Pass" or "Fail" grade at the end of the term.
Q. Who is going to handle and administer summer comps?
A. Your Advisor. Great news: there really is no longer a "summer comps"! But many of you will want to use the summer to complete your Psychology Aspects of Behavior competency paper, so here's the skinny:
1. Benedict will send out a reminder email about all of this by the end of exam week (next week).
2. Read the current student handbook that is posted on the CPSY Blog.
3. Once you have approval from your advisor to do the Psychology Core/Aspects/Bases of Behavior integrative paper, you will also work with your advisor on selecting the topic. The ideal is to have a topic related to your dissertation. Think of this as a large and integrative lit review for your eventual dissertation study.
4. Per the new guidelines, you can start this paper once you have approval from your advisor.
5. There is no program deadline. (Your advisor may give you a deadline just to help keep you moving forward.)
6. Do NOT turn the paper in prior to September 16, 2020.
7. Two faculty members grade your paper. We will not assign faculty graders until fall term.
Q. When will we find out about the final incoming class and who is taking lead on this?
A. Nichole Kelly has managed the admissions process with staff and will be the person to finalize communication with our currently admitted students and will then communicate with the whole program about who the final 2020 cohort is once the process is completed.
Q. Who will run the End-of year, week 10 spring term, celebratory Combined CPSY DocSem?
A. Ellen Hawley McWhirter
Q. Who do I talk to if I have a program concern, ethical concern, course concern, personnel concern?
A. See my previous email this winter (February 6) regarding the appropriate "chain" of communication when you have an ethical, program, or personnel concern. That emails lists best practices and ethical response when you have a specific concern. To summarize, in this order, talk to:
1. The source of the concern (person)
2. your advisor
3. student reps (if that is the appropriate venue of the concern -- e.g. a curriculum problem but not a problem with a specific person)
4. Director of Clinical Training (if related to clinical work/consulting) (Ellen)
5. Program Director (Benedict)
6. Department Head (Beth)
7. COE Associate Dean for Academic Affairs
This spring, 2020, just Skip step 5 since I am not here! All else remains the same.
Q. Who will be planning fall orientations, workshops, etc., preparing for student returns, and manage APA Accreditation requirements and our Annual Report?
A. Benedict. I will be back end of summer to prepare for the fall term and will be Program Director next year. (Ellen will continue as Director of Clinical Training [DCT] next year.)
Thanks all- this isn't everything but most things that involve you as students. Please give me feedback about any of this!
Benedict
