Dear Students,
Please keep in mind that, as highlighted last spring and as reflected in the new externship template, ALL externships and ALL clinical experiences that you wish to count toward APPIC/internship are now REQUIRED to base their evaluations, in part, on direct observation of your clinical work.
Program sanction can no longer be granted for any experience that does not base your evaluation each term, in part, on live observation of your work (co-therapy, observation via glass, electronic recordings of your work, etc.). We do not have flexibility on this matter. It is part of the new Standards of Accreditation from APA. It is also an example of improved training criteria required for best practice training.
Any externship or other agreements you may have made with any sites that do not include this element will have to be renegotiated -- or you will not be able to count those experiences on your APPI form that you submit for internship. (You can still list them on your CV and describe them in cover letters). (For our new students what this means will become clear to you in the next couple of months).
Although Ellen announced this broadly last spring and your student reps were present in faculty meetings when discussed and have reported this information to you, I suspect there may be questions about this. Faculty have discussed this and should have a clear idea of what this means and "looks like." So check with your advisor about this first and feel free to talk to me about it as well.
In fall term I will have a student meeting to attend to any number of items, program housekeeping issues, APA site visit preparations, and questions related to externship requirements like the one above, etc.
Peace and welcome back!!
Benedict
