Subject: coe-staff: COLLEGE SYLLABUS TEMPLATE: 2017-18

Dear College of Education Instructors:

Please find attached the College syllabus template that includes all College and University policy statements that must be included in all course syllabi. An important policy addition this year is information about new Title IX reporting responsibilities.

**To complete your syllabus, you need to open the attached document titled, "Title IX syllabus reporter language," choose your instructor reporter status, and then copy and paste the designated language. Reporting policies differ by reporting status. This should take you only a moment to complete.

The policy syllabus is written like a contract, and I strongly encourage you to consider instructional recommendations to format these policies in ways that are more accessible/ engaging to your students and complement your existing syllabus structure. I attached again the syllabus annotation resource questions and email (below) that I sent last week.

If you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thank you,
Krista

Subject: coe-staff: Do students read your syllabus?

Dear College of Education Instructors:

The policy information for College course syllabi is coming. Thank you for your patience.

NEW TITLE IX POLICY AMENDMENT
We are operating under a new amendment to the UO Title IX policy; that is, the process that UO employees must follow when a student discloses sexual harassment, including sexual or gender-based violence. The Title IX Office staff are creating a policy statement to include in all syllabi. As soon as I receive the policy statement, I'll send the complete College syllabus template.

If you are not yet aware of the new amended Title IX policy and your reporting responsibilities, please visit https://prevention.uoregon.edu/reportingmemo. Campus-wide information sessions will be scheduled.

ENGAGE ALL STUDENTS WITH YOUR SYLLABI
I am sending a few resources that may be useful as you create your syllabi.

* Attached is the syllabus annotation exercise questions that the UO Teaching Engagement Program presented to faculty and staff last year. These questions helped many of us think in greater detail about how our syllabus could be helpful to all learners.

* Information about Universal Design is available at http://tep.uoregon.edu/resources/universaldesign/intro.html . Universal Design principles provide a framework for incorporating inclusive instructional practices into courses. Resources about writing syllabi, teaching methods, and choosing course content are provided on the website.

* If you appreciate professional blogs, the following article has received much attention nationally, "Your syllabus doesn't have to look like a contract" https://chroniclevitae.com/news/1864-your-syllabus-doesn-t-have-to-look-like-a-contract. The point of sending this resource is not to endorse any one kind of syllabus format, but rather to encourage thinking beyond the traditional, easy-to-create syllabus 'contract' to a syllabus that excites students about the course and communicates information that is accessible to all learners.

Thank you again for your patience on the College syllabus policy template.

Best,
Krista
