Subject: coe-staff: Do students read your syllabus?
Dear College of Education Instructors:
The policy information for College course syllabi is coming. Thank you for your patience.
NEW TITLE IX POLICY AMENDMENT
We are operating under a new amendment to the UO Title IX policy; that is, the process that UO employees must follow when a student discloses sexual harassment, including sexual or gender-based violence. The Title IX Office staff are creating a policy statement to include in all syllabi. As soon as I receive the policy statement, I'll send the complete College syllabus template.
If you are not yet aware of the new amended Title IX policy and your reporting responsibilities, please visit https://prevention.uoregon.edu/reportingmemo. Campus-wide information sessions will be scheduled.
ENGAGE ALL STUDENTS WITH YOUR SYLLABI
I am sending a few resources that may be useful as you create your syllabi.
* Attached is the syllabus annotation exercise questions that the UO Teaching Engagement Program presented to faculty and staff last year. These questions helped many of us think in greater detail about how our syllabus could be helpful to all learners.
* Information about Universal Design is available at http://tep.uoregon.edu/resources/universaldesign/intro.html . Universal Design principles provide a framework for incorporating inclusive instructional practices into courses. Resources about writing syllabi, teaching methods, and choosing course content are provided on the website.
* If you appreciate professional blogs, the following article has received much attention nationally, "Your syllabus doesn't have to look like a contract" https://chroniclevitae.com/news/1864-your-syllabus-doesn-t-have-to-look-like-a-contract. The point of sending this resource is not to endorse any one kind of syllabus format, but rather to encourage thinking beyond the traditional, easy-to-create syllabus 'contract' to a syllabus that excites students about the course and communicates information that is accessible to all learners.
Thank you again for your patience on the College syllabus policy template.
Best,
Krista

It appears that there is still a good deal of variability in our required courses-some faculty specify learning outcomes in addition to the CPSY (old) competencies (611, EDUC 612), some only list the CPSY competencies (609 CFP), and some list only their course specific learning outcomes with no CSPY competencies (i.e., 605). A clean solution may be for us to edit all syllabi that we're submitting for the self study so that the we edit the syllabi to delete the term "CPSY Program Competencies" and state instead that these are "CPSY Program Learning Outcomes"
ALL, let me know ASAP if you object to revising your course syllabi to replace the phrase
"CPSY Program Competencies" with "CPSY Program Learning Outcomes"
This language shift will keep all syllabi in line with UO requirements and help to streamline our presentation of Program competencies to those aligned with APA's Profession Wide Competencies and Discipline Specific Knowledge Areas.
Thanks for prompt replies everyone!
