This book presents the trajectory of the case "Chiefs and Mapuche leaders versus Chile" in the Inter-American Court System of Human Rights. It explores the sanctions against Chile from the Inter-American Court for the wrongful application of the anti-terrorist law to the Mapuche leaders. The book reviews the testimonies of the leaders before the international tribunal, as well as offers aspects of the psychosocial expert testimony to unveil the harmful effects of the application of the Anti-terrorist law on members of the Mapuche people.
The families involved in the litigation narrate the effects of territorial dispossession, repression and the criminalization of their demands by the State in the first decades of the twenty-first century in Chile.

This presentation will be of value to those interested in: forensic psychology and culturally sensitive psycho-forensic documentation, indigenous rights, abuses of counter terrorism laws, human rights in Latin America, Chile, the Mapuche people, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the Istanbul Protocol.


Ruth Vargas-Forman is a Chilean psychotherapist and forensic psychologist who has worked extensively with national and international human rights organizations in promoting the use of the Istanbul Protocol and culturally sensitive psycho-forensic documentation. Dr. Vargas has offered expert testimony at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and at the United States Immigration Court. She currently serves as a psychotherapist at Options Counseling Services in Eugene, Oregon.
