Subject: Reactions to 13 Reasons Why
Colleagues,
Some of you may be aware that Netflix released the series 13 Reasons Why last week. This series is based on a popular young adult novel with the same title. The plot revolves around a female student's suicide and 13 audio cassette tapes that she sends to a friend, which are received after her death. Each tape describes how the behavior of others is responsible for her death. This series has received a fair amount of praise and criticism.
The Washington Post has an article about the series:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/arts-and-entertainment/wp/2017/04/14/the-problem-with-how-13-reasons-why-treats-suicide/?utm_term=.78fe81f23f54
Campus colleagues noted an increase in students reporting suicidal thoughts last week and that students have explicitly linked those suicidal thoughts to watching this series. I wanted you to be aware of the series and the impact it may be having on some of our students.
I have attached the JED Foundation's (a non-profit organization that focuses on mental health and suicide prevention on college and university campuses) 13 Reasons Why talking points. These talking points might be useful to you in your conversations with students.
Please contact the Counseling Center and/or the Office of the Dean of Students if you are concerned about a student's suicide risk. Our support/crisis line (541-346-3227) is available when the Counseling Center is closed.
Feel free to contact me if you no longer wish to receive email notifications about the Counseling and Testing Center or about mental health issues that may be relevant to our campus. Let me know if you have a colleague someone who is not on this list and would like to be included in future emails.
Shelly
