Call and Answer: Professional Youth Mentoring and the Encouragement of Constructive, Natural, Life-Long Developmental Processes

In the United States, mentoring is one of the oldest and most commonly-used preventive interventions for youth considered “at risk” for current and future problems. Most mentoring programs (e.g., Big Brothers Big Sisters) rely on volunteers and typically last less than two years. In contrast, Friends of the Children (FOTC) provides “professional” mentoring, delivered by full time employees, from kindergarten through post-high school graduation. A multisite randomized controlled trial (RCT; N = 281) focused on the most vulnerable youth growing up in four urban low resourced communities was initiated in 2008 across four cities. The relation of this work to the life and work of Leona Tyler will be discussed, followed by an introduction to the new field of professional mentoring. The history of the trial and outcomes at age 19 years will be presented. The implications of the findings for the field will be discussed.
