The Weekly Vol. 7 #25

Dean’s Message

Dear COE Community,

This week we are celebrating graduate students and research/innovation, both of which are central to the "magic" of what we do here in the college. At Monday's kickoff event for the UO's Week of Research & Innovation, it was inspiring to hear President Scholz highlight the impactful and socially meaningful research conducted by COE faculty, students, and staff. It’s a wonderful week to celebrate the people and ideas that make our college thrive, whether you’re in Eugene, Portland, or Los Angeles at AERA! Thank you for being part of what makes this such a special place.

Best wishes,

Emily

Spotlights and Recognition

Shout Out to Amy Harter and Lisa Fortin
A huge shout out to Amy Harter and Lisa Fortin for their outstanding coordination of the 2026 COE Educator Career Fair. This year’s event brought together over 20 participating districts—including districts represented through two Regional Educator Networks—and engaged 107 student attendees, all of whom were welcomed and checked in smoothly by program faculty and staff volunteers. District representatives shared overwhelmingly positive feedback, noting that students were exceptionally well prepared, professional, and deeply engaged throughout the fair. Amy and Lisa's thoughtful planning, attention to detail, and skilled leadership made this complex event run seamlessly, and we are grateful for the meaningful impact the career fair created for our students, faculty, and district partners.

Shout Out to Danielle Triplett from Educational & Community Supports (ECS)
Danielle Triplett continues to deliver a high standard of training and support in her role on the PBISApps Training Team. She has presented at national conferences and co-hosts an educational podcast through our organization. She has also spearheaded the rejuvenation of a national community of practice for PBIS practitioners with more than 500 participants joining us since its inception. Her kindness, work ethic, and approachable demeanor makes her one of our top trainers and a fantastic asset to the team and organization.

Alumni Spotlight: Leah Schluter<https://education.uoregon.edu/alumni-leah-schluter>
The COE has long emphasized the power of applied learning, community engagement, and reflective practice. For Leah Schluter, a 2016 graduate of the Family and Human Services program, those values became the foundation of a career dedicated to violence prevention, child safety, and systems‑level change.

Alumni Spotlight: Emily Temple Johnson<https://education.uoregon.edu/alumni-emily-temple-johnson>
FHS gave me a grounding in professional competencies and systems thinking that has shaped every role I’ve held since. I’ve rested on that foundation as a parent, a youth pastor, a middle school teacher, a nonprofit leader, and now in my work back at the University of Oregon in the Center for Childhood Safety and Wellbeing.

Faculty Spotlight: University of Oregon experts see promise and challenges in updated food pyramid<https://streamyard.com/867h8hwddfbs>
Nutrition experts at UO hosted a nutritional guideline panel to discuss the Trump Administration's change to the food pyramid and how that may impact school lunches. COE faculty members Nichole Kelly and Sarah Stapleton served on the panel.

Student Spotlight: Student Advances Research at National Conference Through Donor-Funded Support<https://education.uoregon.edu/abbie-sanders-prevsci>
The College of Education’s donor-funded Professional Development Program is helping graduate students take important steps toward their future careers. Abbie Sanders, a doctoral candidate in Prevention Science, was able to present her paper Social Networks and Parents’ Early Reentry Outcomes at the annual American Psychology Law Society meeting after receiving professional development funds.

Reminders

Mark your Calendars - Ducks Give Day is on Thursday, May 14, 2026.

Learn more about the College of Education’s Ducks Give goals, challenges, and featured funds<https://ducksgive.uoregon.edu/coe>.

Ducks Give is the University of Oregon’s annual giving day, a 24-hour university-wide campaign that invites our community to support the areas of campus they care about most. Thanks to COE faculty and staff last year, the College of Education was the top academic unit for number of gifts for the second year in a row, raising more than $141,000 for scholarships and program support.

This year, the COE is setting an ambitious goal of 180 gifts, to unlock nearly $50,000 and counting in challenge gifts. Any gift of $5 or more to a College of Education fund through the Ducks Give platform counts towards our goal. We are highlighting three priority funds:

· COE General Scholarship Fund

· Sapsik’ʷałá Teacher Education Program Fund

· HEDCO Clinic Discretionary Fund
