Dear Campus Colleagues,

On behalf of the Basic Needs Program, I want to share important updates about impacts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) amidst the federal government shutdown, as well as information on how to best support students' food security during this time.
Please share this message with your students and other colleagues as appropriate. This information can also be found on the basic needs website<https://basicneeds.uoregon.edu/important-update-snap-benefits-oregon>. Thank you all for the work you do to sustain our campus community, and I sincerely thank you for spreading awareness of how we can support our students during this time.

Where We Are:
If the federal government shutdown continues into November, people who receive SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits in Oregon will not receive their benefits until federal funding resumes.
The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) nutrition program will not be affected by the government shutdown in November. Families receiving WIC can continue to use their benefits as usual.
We understand that this news may cause concern, as food is an essential basic need and any delays are stressful. The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) is working hard to keep people informed and will share updates on its website<https://www.oregon.gov/odhs/news/Pages/snap-updates.aspx?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#background> as more information is available.
If the shutdown ends prior to November 1, ODHS will work to distribute benefits as close to the normal schedule as possible. If it is after November 1, benefits will be issued as quickly as possible, though delays could occur due to the volume of benefits needing to be issued at one time.
During this time, the Basic Needs Program will also be purchasing additional non-perishable and select dairy items for the ECM Student Food Pantry<https://basicneeds.uoregon.edu/food>, which students can access for free to pick up a supplemental supply of essential groceries. The pantry is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4-6pm at 710 E. 17th Ave. Free parking is available and no application is required. Students need to bring their ID and a shopping bag.
How to Support Students:

  * Send them the information below on how to stay informed and where to go for resources

  * Refer them directly to the ECM Student Food Pantry, Produce Drop, and/or Oregon Food Finder

  * Refer them to the Basic Needs Program if they would like to meet with someone to discuss their options

     * You can fill out a Basic Needs Assistance Form<https://cm.maxient.com/reportingform.php?UnivofOregon=&layout_id=70> <https://cm.maxient.com/reportingform.php?UnivofOregon=&layout_id=70> on behalf of a student and/or send it to them to complete
How to Support Food Security Efforts at UO:
If you are interested in helping UO students maintain their food security, you can do so by supporting the Student Food Pantry and Ducks Feeding Ducks. Donations help keep our shelves stocked and provide funding to students who do not have the money or meal points available to purchase an on-campus meal.

I am a Designated Reporter. which means that I am required to report all incidents of prohibited discrimination and harassment including sexual harassment and violence that I learn about to the UO Office of Investigations and Civil Rights Compliance (OICRC). An OICRC team member will follow up with you to offer information, resources, and any available options for addressing what was reported. You can receive support without participating in a formal university process and without sharing additional information. Student agency is important to me and to the OICRC team.
