Dear COE Community,

Many of you saw the news yesterday of my imminent departure from the University of Oregon to become the Provost of Michigan State University. Yesterday my inbox was flooded with thoughtful notes and kind words (if I haven’t responded back to you, I promise I will!) and my cell phone was pinging all day long. Your collective reactions to the news were a reminder of the community we have here – we are a community who cares, appreciates, respects, and includes. I’m so grateful to have experienced this place, and all of you, for many years.

To say that my decision to leave is bittersweet is quite the understatement. Oregon – and our College of Education – has been my beloved home for 16 years. My husband and I have raised a family here, and while I’m a California Native and Bill is a New Yorker, we have two Oregonian kids who have never lived anywhere else. You can imagine that they (and we as a family) are experiencing all the possible emotions. Thank you for your support and your grace as we navigate this transition. My last day in the office will be June 25th. That day will be here before I know it, it will be after the term ends and we celebrate our students’ graduation and all of their collective accomplishments.

I have appreciated the opportunity to work with you and learn from you these past 16 years. Although I will be transitioning to another Big Ten school (whose mascot is not as cool as ours, but the school also wears the color green - convenient), you will always be in my heart. I credit the University of Oregon, and all the amazing people I’ve had a chance to learn from, for positioning me to continue my journey and pursue this next advancement. It’s another chapter of the book we’re all reading…the book that focuses on advancing our world through education, research, service, and equity.

To be continued…I’m not gone yet. 😉

Warmly,
Laura Lee

Spotlights and Recognition
Ducks Give was a huge success for the College of Education!
We raised over $128,000 from 183 gifts, unlocking $94,000 of challenge gifts throughout the day. Once again, we were the highest academic unit across campus for number of gifts! A huge thank you to everyone who gave, shared, or cheered the COE on. Your participation helped push us over the finish line and truly made the difference in reaching our goal and further raise funds for COE students.

New $11 million NIH Center Grant funded
Congratulations to PIs Beth Stormshak and John Seeley and a team from the Prevention Science Institute, College of Education, and the Ballmer Institute on a new $11+ million center grant funded by the National Institute on Mental Health. This competitive center grant will focus on improving the lives of children and families in schools, and builds on our national expertise in this area.
The overall goal of our transdisciplinary center for Expanding Access and Accelerating Delivery of Interventions to Promote Mental Health for Underserved Adolescents (ACCESS) is to improve the mental health of underserved youth, families, and school communities through an optimized, multi-tiered focus on contextual, behavioral, and individual systems. The focus will be testing effectiveness-implementation models of school-based prevention during the middle school years, a time when escalating rates of mental health distress in early adolescence culminate in mental health and behavioral disorders that can last a lifetime.
