Dear COE Community,
On Monday I was convinced it was Wednesday. And yesterday I was hoping and wishing it was Friday. To say that the term is flying by is an understatement. So much is happening right now, and many may be feeling a sense of anxiety about our future…and not just our long-term future, but what is in store for us next term or next year. I read an interesting article today on resilient leadership and leading through chaotic times. (UO has an institutional subscription to Academic Impressions and I’ve found many of their materials interesting and helpful). In this article, the author posed several thoughtful questions that can help us build resilience. A few of the questions that I found especially meaningful include:
* What emotions am I experiencing right now, and how are they influencing my decisions?
* What difficult realities do I need to accept, and how can I remain optimistic despite them?
* Am I staying connected to my core purpose, and does my work align with my values?
* What small actions can I take today to encourage resilience and adaptability in myself and others?
* What is within my control right now, and where do I need to let go?
Spending a small amount of time reflecting on the above questions helped me feel more grounded and committed to the mission of the College of Education, our people, our work, and ultimately our impact.
Thank you for being a part of this special community. Thank you for showing resilience during these challenging times.
With gratitude,
Laura Lee

Invitation to Discuss UO’s Available Transportation Options
A Message from Transportation Services:
As you know, our university faces ongoing challenges with limited parking availability, a situation that is compounded by the high demand for these spaces. In alignment with our university's values and commitment to sustainability, employee health, equity, and climate action, we offer a suite of transportation options programs and services including free transit passes, rideshare coordination, bikeshare, carshare, teleworking guides and promotion of walking and biking to campus. However, the utilization of these alternatives remains comparatively low. Therefore, we are hosting discussions with our campus community to better understand people’s perspectives, real and perceived barriers, possible incentives, and creation of effective messaging to encourage use of these available options.
The workshops will take place on the following dates:
* Tuesday, March 11: 12:00 - 1:30pm: Lunch provided.
* Thursday, March 13: 1:30 - 3:00pm: Light refreshments available.
Transportation Services is looking for 5 faculty, 2 classified staff, 1 OA, and 1 GE from COE to attend.
If you are interested in participating in this important discussion, please email educationdean at uoregon.edu<mailto:educationdean at uoregon.edu> to sign up by March 5.

Sapsik’ʷałá Students Participate in Eugene’s First Indigenous Fashion Show
The Native American Arts and Crafts Makers (NAACM) and the city of Eugene’s Cultural Services collaborated to host Eugene’s first ever Indigenous Fashion Show. The show’s title, “Futurism Inspired by Tradition: What does Indigenous Fashion Mean to You?” The goals for the fashion show included highlighting artists whose work intersects art, fashion, and culture. The program also wanted to raise awareness of Native artists, designers, and performers in the Eugene area; while also promoting the Eugene Native American Arts and Craft Makers.
Sapsik’ʷałá was well represented in the event as a number of current students participated in the fashion show as either models and or designers. Grow Your Own (GYO) intern Angela Noah (White Mountain Apache/Oklahoma Choctaw) was a featured designer and current Sapsik’ʷałá students Julia Brown (Shoshone-Paiute Tribes), Marquel Holiday (Ihanktoŋwaŋ), Vanessa Holmes (Navajo), and Karlie Scott (Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation) participated as models.

Sapsik’ʷałá alum (MEd 24’ Secondary Education) Savanna Rilatos (Conf. Tribes of Siletz Indians) was recently featured in an online news article published by the Oregonian. The article titled, Siletz Regalia Sharing Closet breaks down barriers to Indigenous culture: Season of Sharing 2024,<https://www.oregonlive.com/living/2024/11/siletz-regalia-sharing-closet-breaks-down-barriers-to-indigenous-culture-season-of-sharing-2024.html> was featured on the Oregonian’s online news platform Oregon Live and detailed Rilatos’ and her cousin Jeidah DeZurney’s efforts in developing a non-profit organization that bridges access to culture for many American Indian youth.
The Siletz Regalia Sharing Closet gives youth and individuals an opportunity to connect with culture through the use of traditional and pow wow regalia.
The closet is mobile and can be accessed at local PNW pow wows and cultural events loaning regalia to youth and other individuals looking to connect through culture. In addition to the regalia loan program, the newly founded non-profit also offers regalia making and other traditional craft workshops. Savanna shares the importance of the work her and her cousin are engaged, “I think one of the biggest things with healing our communities and healing our youth is getting them involved in the culture and giving them that sense of belonging,”

OPB Article: UO’s Center for Childhood Safety and Wellbeing on prevalence of child abuse in schools and elsewhere<https://www.opb.org/article/2025/02/12/uos-center-for-childhood-safety-and-wellbeing-on-prevalence-of-child-abuse-in-schools-and-elsewhere/>
Excerpt: Reports of child sexual abuse in schools in Oregon<https://www.opb.org/article/2024/12/17/st-helens-oregon-sexual-abuse-teachers-school-high-middle-coach-sexual-misconduct-grooming-crime/> have drawn outrage and concern in the communities where they have occurred. Researchers and therapists who focus on helping child abuse survivors have best practices and prevention strategies, but they don’t actually know how prevalent abuse is in the state. Oregon is not alone. According to the University of Oregon’s Center for Childhood Safety and Wellbeing<https://csaw.uoregon.edu/>, no state has yet taken that on. Center director Jeff Todahl intends to change that with a study that’s now underway. Researchers have already done a pilot program in Lane County and are confident the statewide study will be completed by year’s end. Todahl joins us to share what we know about how to prevent and respond to child abuse<https://www.protectourchildren.org/> in Oregon and how it can be improved.
