Dear COE Community,
We made it to the end of another academic year! Please take a moment to savor this moment and reflect on our shared work over the past year. Thank you for supporting our students and each other this year. We have a strong and committed team in the College of Education and I’m grateful for each of you. I hope you’ll plan on attending the College of Education Commencement ceremony on Monday June 17th (1-3pm outside on the Knight Library Lawn). This is a time to show up for our students and celebrate their accomplishments and this epic milestone!

Deadline - Career Faculty Promotion Reviews 2024-25
Career faculty who would like to be reviewed for promotion in AY 24-25 need to declare their intent by June 15 (9-month faculty) or June 30 (12-month faculty). To declare intent to submit materials for promotion review, email your department head (instructional/clinical faculty) or research unit director (research faculty) with a cc to Lisa Mazzei (mazzei at uoregon.edu<mailto:mazzei at uoregon.edu>) and Angie Whalen (awhalen at uoregon.edu<mailto:awhalen at uoregon.edu>).

Every year, the Office of the Provost hosts onboarding and trainings for new and mid-career faculty and department/unit heads in June and September. Spotlights and Recognition:
John Lind, Heather McLure, and Elizabeth Jankowski receive 4-year IES grant
John Lind<https://education.uoregon.edu/directory/faculty/all/jlind> (PI) with Heather McClure<https://education.uoregon.edu/directory/faculty/all/hmcclure> (co-PI) and Elizabeth Jankowski (co-PI) have received a 4-year IES/NCER grant to develop an intervention to promote family-school-community partnerships, student literacy and attendance through engaging Pacific Islander families with K-5 students and their teachers in the Pacific Northwest. Congratulations to John, Heather, and Elizabeth!
Keynote Speaker Rhonda Nese | Black Graduation Celebration
Rhonda Nese will be the keynote speaker for the 2024 Black Graduation Celebration. This event, which celebrates the accomplishments and achievements of Black students, will take place this Friday June 14th from 6-8pm at the Global Scholars Hall Great Room. We are proud to have Dr. Nese representing our college. Beatriz Cabrera selected to receive the Social Justice Thesis Award
College of Education student, Beatriz Cabrera has been selected to receive the Social Justice Thesis Award from the Clark Honors College for her undergraduate thesis project. Beatriz is an Educational Foundations major with a Spanish minor and was a part of the 2023 HEDCO Institute Undergraduate Scholars cohort. Sean Grant of the HEDCO Institute served as her undergraduate thesis advisor for this project. Beatriz was able to use many of the research skills she developed during the HEDCO undergraduate scholars program as part of her thesis research project, specifically, methods for systematically reviewing and collecting data from archival documents.
Graduate Spotlight: Tony Mann
Last week’s graduate spotlight featured Tony Mann, an upcoming graduate of the COE’s Doctor of Education (DEd) in the Educational Leadership program. After graduation, Tony plans to continue serving as Molalla River School District Superintendent and find ways to influence student well-being across the state of Oregon and nationally through his work on adolescent recovery from substance abuse disorder. Graduate Spotlight: Sarah Quinn
We’ve also featured Sarah Quinn<https://education.uoregon.edu/sarah-quinn-sped> who is graduating from our Special Education PhD program. The SPED program’s robust training in research methodologies prepared Sarah for her career as an educator and she is thankful to have been surrounded by peers and faculty who are passionate about tackling issues in schools. Sarah will also complete the program as an OSEP scholar through Professor Wendy Machalicek's leadership grant, Project Co-LEAD. She will be starting as an assistant professor of special education at Eastern Michigan University this fall.

Year End Reminders and Events:
HEDCO Education Station Hours
The Education Station café, located downstairs in the HEDCO building, will be closed starting this Friday, June 14th. The café will have limited operating hours during the summer term and is planning to be open for summer sessions from June 24th – August 16th. The café plans to open again for Fall on September 23rd, 2024.
NIH Academy Training Program for Early-Career Faculty
The Office of the Vice President of Research and Innovation (OVPRI) seeks to boost the success of early-career researchers applying to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by launching its first-ever NIH Academy. This comprehensive training program will enhance the competitiveness of NIH submissions among early career scholars at the UO. The OVPRI requests applications from tenure-track assistant professors, research assistant professors, and research associates to create a training cohort of 6-8 faculty for the 2024-25 academic year. All participants will be expected to prepare and submit an NIH R01 (or similar size) application in June 2025. Faculty members who would like to participate in this training program must apply by June 14, 2024. UO Native/Indigenous Graduation Celebration | June 15
The UO’s 2024 Native/Indigenous Graduation Celebration will be held on Saturday, June 15th at 2:30pm in the EMU Ballroom. The College of Education is a well-respected powerhouse for supporting Indigenous graduate students through the Sapsik’ʷałá Program. This year85% of Indigenous master’s graduates and 100% of Indigenous PhD graduates are graduating from our College of Education. Congratulations to our Indigenous graduates!
ELOEL Summer Leadership Institute 2024
The Education Leaders for Oregon's English Learners (ELOEL) project is offering a 30-hour summer EL Professional Development Leadership Institute for school administrators and TOSAs on June 24th, July 1st, and August 5th from 8:30 am–1:00pm. Participants will also earn a certificate for 30 PDUs and receive a stipend for their participation. Email eloel at uoregon.edu<mailto:eloel at uoregon.edu> for more information.

Sapsik'wala Project Coordinator
The Department of Education Studies (EDST) seeks a Sapsik'wala Project Coordinator<https://careers.uoregon.edu/en-us/job/533983/sapsikwala-project-coordinator> to provide culturally sustaining leadership in the day-to-day operations of the Sapsik'ʷałá Program. The program coordinator supports to recruit, train, and support American Indian/Alaska Native (Al/AN) students who will earn their teacher licensure at UO and engage in service payback as teachers in schools that have a high proportion of Al/AN students.
