coe-staff: The Monthly Vol. 4 #2

Laura Lee McIntyre llmcinty at uoregon.edu

Dear COE Community,

Summer is winding down and, while I’m sad to see the beautiful summer months slip away, I’m excited to welcome our students, faculty, and staff to our 2024-25 academic year next month. This past week I had the opportunity to attend a Provost Council retreat where I worked with colleagues across campus to identify our shared priorities for the upcoming year. Our new provost, Chris Long<https://provost.uoregon.edu/about-us#provost>, is a values-driven leader and his approach to leadership is collaborative and transparent. Collaboration and transparency are values that resonate with our COE community. I’ve asked Provost Long to attend an upcoming COE faculty/staff meeting, and we’re in the process of nailing down the specific date that works for him. More to come…

I hope you bask in the final weeks of summer, find joy in the small things, and bottle some of that August energy and bring it out in the coming months (as needed). We have much to celebrate in the COE. Thanks to each of you for your contributions to our college. Each of us has an important place in our community and you make this place special.

Warmly,
Laura Lee

National Science Foundation (NSF) Grant Awarded
Congratulations to Jerry Rosiek<https://education.uoregon.edu/directory/faculty/all/jrosiek> for receiving NSF funding on the grant proposal Expanding Understanding of Support for Students of Color in STEM Educator Career Pathways: An Educational Ecosystem Approach. This five-year NSF sponsored research project employs a synthesis of critical race theory counterstory methodologies and posthumanist critical cartographic analysis to better understand the experiences of diverse undergraduate students seeking entry into the k-12 STEM education profession. The project involves long term collaborative research with undergraduate students. It focuses on documenting the material and discursive aspects of systemic exclusion as they are encountered in vivo by students. Case studies of STEM pathway students will help sensitize university level teachers, advisors, and leaders to the elements of student experience that matter most. The purpose is to widen the lens with which student experience is being examined, emphasizing the insights and agency of those most directly impacted by policy and practices.
