Dear COE Community,

As we wrap up Week 9 and head into the long weekend, I wish to share my appreciation for our COE faculty and staff for working to make our classrooms, programs, research, and outreach meaningful and impactful. Everyday I feel a profound sense of appreciation and respect for the work you do – both the small and large tasks. These past few weeks we have seen a quickening of our pace, especially with tenure track faculty interviews beginning in the COE. Please watch for announcements on our coe-staff listserv for candidate visits and plan to attend, participate, and engage with our future colleagues! Your participation enhances our recruitment efforts and creates genuine opportunities for community-building. Thank you, Team COE.

As we turn the days ahead and the long weekend, I hope each of you finds time to restore and connect with the people and things that are meaningful.

Sending my gratitude to each of you.

warmly,
Laura Lee

Remembering Dan Van Otten

With fondness and great appreciation, we remember our friend and colleague, Dr. Dan Van Otten who passed away this month. In addition to earning his MA and PhD degrees from the UO (in History), Dan worked for many years with Janne Underriner<https://nili.uoregon.edu/about/staff/>, a founder along with the 9 Oregon Tribes of the Northwest Indian Language Institute. Beginning in 2022, Dan worked on an ODE/OIE-funded project called Native Voices to identify causes and consequences of disproportionate discipline for Native students. Dan was passionate about a new project to develop a Native youth thriving scale. He was also a key part of the prestigious regional language center grant<https://around.uoregon.edu/content/uo-federal-initiative-aid-revitalization-native-languages> recently received by NILI. Dan was active throughout his life with indigenous education and with tribes throughout the Pacific Northwest. With the passing of Dr. Dan Van Otten, we have lost an extraordinary leader, colleague, and friend.
