Dear COE community,

Spring term is rapidly coming to a close and another academic year is almost in our rear view mirror. The Office of the Provost is planning two important sessions next week that epitomizes our yearlong campus work and conversations surrounding promoting equity and inclusion. The Provost's series Inclusive Excellence in Action<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/t.e2ma.net/click/kxelih/sbj4dh/c3l8e4__;!!C5qS4YX3!GS5kSHjvybsPjRF5XGYiuE62I-Lhb_QoPIbNYX3wlC_DKL7nwdqudn2UoDciS8zzpsdzKeicsY-E0QKo$> is part of a campus high-priority effort to create a culture of inclusive teaching at the UO, enhance our efforts at hiring and retaining a diverse faculty, and work toward more equitable student success. On Tuesday 5/30 there is a session called Closing Student Achievement Equity Gaps, which focuses on reducing inequities in student achievement in our campus classrooms. The session is in the EMU Redwood Auditorium. Many of our academic leadership will be in attendance and it is open to all UO faculty and staff. On Thursday 6/1the Undergrad Education Student Success office is hosting their annual Student Success Summit<https://uess.uoregon.edu/student-success-summit-2023>. Both of these events center student success and equity and focus on best practices in improving inclusive instruction.

I hope to see you there!

Warmly,
Laura Lee

Updates and Upcoming:

  * Merit Policy Vote and Comment: Please use the COE Merit Policy survey link here<https://oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6lYUITAfwJAtxDo> to register your vote of yes or no by Friday May 26th 2023 for the COE Merit Policy that was developed by COE committee this Spring. You may add comments in relation to either a yes or no vote. Any comments resulting in any substantive changes to the policy will be returned to the COE faculty for review. The Merit policy is attached. For this year the merit policy for all campus units was based on a template that was provided by the Office of the Provost. That template is also attached.

  * Communication Preferences in the COE: Last week we conducted a fun survey using our new QuackBack micro-chat tool. We asked about your COE communication preferences and the result<https://quackback.uoregon.edu/results/nCpqbqNV> was no surprise! If you haven't signed up for QuackBack<https://quackback.uoregon.edu/> but want to be part of the fun, you can still sign up by texting "START" to 541-313-3060. We're using QuackBack to share timely COE-specific announcement and get your feedback or input on occasional COE topics. Thank you again to Dane Ramshaw for bringing this fun tool to life for the COE!

Reminders:

  * COE Faculty and Staff Awards: Please take a moment to reflect on the great work your colleagues do and submit a nomination to share their outstanding work with others. The College of Education recognizes outstanding faculty, officers of administration, and staff in the areas of teaching, service to students, administration, research or outreach, and diversity. Nominations are accepted from students, faculty, officers of administration, and staff connected to the COE. To nominate, simply submit the online nomination form<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_ekr5E9ixqIhW0mO__;!!C5qS4YX3!BtotlFRpHsEMRvw3Mp_TneQdQUEiT9511fwlaMTU9xswkg9HW2u8lxZh-PC6B6IlLFYE9cFBE5ULug_Zn5staQ$> along with a brief letter (3-5 bullet points) in support of your nomination. The nomination letter can be bullet points and can be emailed directly to lfortin at uoregon.edu<mailto:lfortin at uoregon.edu?subject=Letter%20of%20Support> or attached to the bottom of the nomination form. Please be as specific as possible in your submission materials. The awards committee can only consider the information you provide in their decisions as they do not rely on any personal knowledge committee members may have about a nominee, so please be detailed in your nomination. Nominations are due by May 30, 2023. Recipients will be announced June 9, 2023.

Accolades:

  * The All-Campus Advising Association (ACAA), The Division of Undergraduate Education, Student Success (UESS), and the ACAA Awards Committee have awarded Emma Bjorngard Basayne the Professional Advisor Award for 2023! Congratulations, Emma, on this well-deserved award and thank you for your excellence in advising and supporting our COE students.

  * Kent McIntosh (PI), Brigid Flannery (Co-PI), and Angus Kittelman (Co-PI) along with partners at University of South Florida and SRI International were awarded a five year 4 million dollar US Department of Education "Education Innovation and Research (EIR) Early-Phase award" for their project Freshmen Success: Implementation of Comprehensive Universal Supports for School Engagement. The purpose of the project is to improve 9th grade student engagement and academic and behavior outcomes through the implementation of (a) a 9th grade leadership team trained to conduct data-based decision making and monitor student outcomes, (b) explicit instruction of a prevention-oriented engagement curriculum taught by 9th grade teachers, and (c) peer support from selected and trained upperclassmen. Project activities will include implementing, testing, and further refinement of Freshmen Success within 40 high schools in 10 districts in the state of Florida.

  * Jeff Todahl and Sara Loveless, Co-PI's with the Center for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect, recently received two grants: One supports Roots of Empathy<https://rootsofempathy.org/> program implementation in the South Lane School District ($77,500.00, Yarg Foundation), the second supports expansion of the 90by30 Initiative's efforts to engage youth and promote social justice and violence prevention throughout Lane County ($525,000.00, The Ford Family Foundation). More information about this work is here: The Center for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect<https://cpan.uoregon.edu/>; The 90by30 Initiative<https://www.90by30.com/>.

* Kent McIntosh (PI), along with partners at Oregon Research Institute, Michigan's MTSS Technical Assistance Center, and University of Texas at Arlington were awarded a five-year $3.8 million dollar US Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences award for their project ReACT Initial Efficacy: Testing the Effects of a Promising Intervention to Achieve Equity in School Discipline. The purpose of the project is to test the effects of a schoolwide professional development intervention on racial disparities in exclusionary school discipline, academic achievement, and school climate. ReACT (Racial equity through: Assessing data for vulnerable decision points, Culturally responsive behavior strategies, and Teaching about implicit bias and strategies to neutralize it) was developed through a successful IES Development and Innovation Project. The pilot, an underpowered RCT in 8 schools, showed evidence of acceptability and significant effects on discipline disparities for Black (i.e., African American) students, as well as decreased exclusions for all student subgroups. This project will provide a more rigorous test with a larger sample on a wider range of student outcomes.

  * QRME PhD student, Merly Klaas, was recently awarded the Slyff Graduate Fellowship for International Research award: https://gradschool.oregonstate.edu/awards/oregon-sylff-fellowship-international. The Sylff Fellowship is offered to PhD students at PSU, OSU and UO across all social science and humanities fields to conduct research in international contexts. The Fellowship is highly competitive with only 7 awards made across all three institutions, and comes with an annual stipend of $15,000 to conduct scholarly research.

  * PrevSci MS student and incoming QRME PhD student, Brittany Spinner, just learned that she was selected for the SREE Summer Fellows program (https://www.sree.org/fellowship). She receives an $8,000 stipend to work with a funding organization and a client (in this case Ascendium Education Group) to put together a literature review and policy brief on ways to remove structural barriers to higher education success. She'll get to present her findings at an EdFunders meeting and SREE 2023, as well as have her brief featured on the SREE website.
