Dear COE community,

It was wonderful to see so many faculty and staff attend our COE-sponsored workshop on Supporting International Students, held in partnership with the Office of Global Education, the International Students Scholars Services (ISSS) Office, and the American English Institute (AEI). We had faculty, staff, and academic advisors from across the COE attend the workshop on Monday. I loved seeing some of our academic program coordinators attend (shout out to Angela Burham) as well as some of our research track faculty (Shawn Irvin, Lina Shanley) to name a few! Each one of us plays a critical role in supporting students. Special thanks to Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann for helping shape such an informative session, and to our guests - Dennis Galvan (Global Ed), Becky Crabtree (ISSS), and Cheryl Ernst (AEI) - who thoughtfully contributed their expertise to the presentation and discussion. A recording of this session (and some additional resources) will be shared with our COE community very soon. The genesis of this workshop was directly born out of listening sessions that Dianna and I held in the Fall term with International Students, as part of our larger DEI committee strategy. We look forward to additional engagement opportunities with faculty, staff, and students during our ongoing listening sessions.

Speaking of listening sessions...the grand tour continues. Last week we had a fruitful discussion with career track research faculty...some brand new to the COE and some seasoned with years of experience. These conversations open the door for more meaningful community connections and provide an important platform for sharing observations about what's going well and what needs the Dean's office attention. I'm grateful for the time our faculty, staff, and students are devoting to these conversations. Your voice matters to our community.

This is a long Weekly email....be sure you read all the way to the bottom to get all of the content...and congratulate our students and faculty on their accomplishments.

Warmly,
Laura Lee

Updates and Upcoming:

  * Division of Student Life Honors and Awards: The Division of Student Life Honors and Awards program recognizes and honors students' outstanding academic achievements, progress in community leadership and service, and willingness to challenge conventional thought in the areas of social and cultural issues. Visit this link<https://studentlife.uoregon.edu/honors-and-awards> to see a full list of available awards and honors. I encourage you to consider nominating a student for one of the honors and awards. This is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate our students as they excel both in and outside of the classroom. Please note, in an effort to make awards more accessible students can also nominate themselves or other students.

In addition, they are seeking volunteers to serve on the selection committees. This is traditionally a very uplifting experience and volunteers have the pleasure of learning about the exceptional ways in which our students are engaging and exceling. This commitment involves reading and scoring approximately 20 applications and meeting with a committee to select recipients.

  * Application reviews begin week of April 10th.
  * Committees will meet and select awardees during the week of April 24th.
  * Committee members are invited to attend the in-person light reception ceremony on May 18th, with more details to follow.

Please connect with Christie Ferris, cferris2 at uoregon.edu<mailto:cferris2 at uoregon.edu> and DoS Front Office Coordinator, by March 24th if you are interested in serving on a committee this year and/or if you have any questions.

The purpose of the I3 award is to foster new interdisciplinary research projects and collaborative partnerships across departments and colleges at UO. Funding under this program is to be used to successfully develop a novel transdisciplinary line of research that leads to submission of one or more substantial proposals for extramural support for a longer-term project. I3 awards provide up to $50,000 in funding for a project period up to 2 years, and is open to all tenured and tenure-track faculty, as well as NTTF faculty in the research associate and research professor, research scientist, research engineer, or principal research scientist classification with 0.75+ FTE appointments during the academic year(s) of the research award.

  * Community Safety: Despite enjoying relative physical safety for long stretches at a time in the COE, it is important for us to regularly revisit university and college safety resources and guidelines. While we don't enjoy thinking about the possibility of harm or danger, it is helpful for us to be moderately prepared even during the best of times. Based on some recent requests, we are sharing a few reminders that we hope you keep in mind and share with those around you to assist in keeping yourselves and our community safe.

  1. When in doubt and/or when safety is a concern, we are encouraged to use the following contacts:

  * For emergencies, life-threatening situations, or crimes in progress: 911
  * Non-emergency assistance and information on campus: University of Oregon Police Department, 541-346-2919
  * Off-campus, for non-emergencies or to report past crimes: Eugene Police, 541-682-5111

  1. Regularly refresh our knowledgebase around the various protocols, resources, and guidelines that are in place for our own safety and for the safety of our community.

  * A recording of the safety briefing held in the COE last year is included here COE safety briefing April of 2022<https://uoregon.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=ad27f488-e058-4e99-9d78-ae8b011018b8>. There is also additional information in the form of safety videos, materials, and guidance available here https://safety.uoregon.edu/active-threat that is worth reviewing regularly. This latter site also includes specific guidance for faculty (such as syllabus language), as well as information about personal safety.

  1. Stay vigilant:

  * There are also helpful additional resources about moving around campus at night<https://safety.uoregon.edu/safety-escorts-and-night-safety>, and general security<https://admissions.uoregon.edu/safety>.
  * We are all encouraged to have a plan - don't be afraid to have a discussion with those in your area about how to respond in your unit if unusual situations present themselves. Different locations may have unique considerations.
Accolades:

  * Angie Whalen co-authored a book, Ethics and Law for School Psychologists: A Vignette-Based Workbook<https://www.wiley.com/en-us/Ethics+and+Law+for+School+Psychologists%3A+A+Vignette+Based+Workbook-p-9781119859666>, that was recently published.
