Dear COE community,
It is beginning to feel impossible to keep up with the list of tragedies that jolt our community, and to acknowledge those individuals (whether many or few) who are impacted by the events that are reported regularly in our news feeds. From the recent earthquake that impacted Turkey and Syria to the events on the Michigan State University campus, we know that there is someone here in our own college who is impacted in a unique way and who needs the support and acknowledgement of our community. It rests with all of us to provide that support, to acknowledge the context of the day, and, when possible, to offer a silent hand in the important task of moving forward while feeling.
More and more we struggle with these messages. There is a lot to acknowledge. We will always feel the weight of these headlines. Always. The feelings, whatever they may be, are pure, genuine, and individual. We don't force ourselves to feel. Words, however, are tougher; and for certain situations, the spoken or written language can feel like the clunkiest communication option.
This spring, the DEI Committee plans to re-institute the hosting of a space to come together in community conversation and discourse around topics that resonate with our community -- similar to the 21-day Equity Challenge. While these conversations will not replace the acknowledgement of individual events that have community impact, they will allow us to go deeper than (what sometimes can feel like) perfunctory acknowledgement and will allow us to capture a wide array of our community's experiences well beyond the sporadic acknowledgement of tragedy. More information will be coming in the coming weeks.
I am continuously reminded of the strength and resilience that we demonstrate on a daily basis. Just today, for example, we came together in honor and celebration of our fabulous COE Classified Staff. Thanks to Lisa Fortin for planning a wonderful luncheon to celebrate the contributions of our staff. As I mentioned in my remarks at today's lunch, our staff are critical for holding us together and moving us forward. I used the analogy of the faculty being the bones and the staff being the connective tissue - critical for mobility and strength. Each of you plays an important role in our COE Community.
Thanks for supporting each other and for caring for yourself.
Warmly,
Laura Lee
Updates and Upcoming:
* Faculty and Staff from typically underrepresented or historically marginalized backgrounds Listening Session: On Friday February 24th, 2023 from 11:00am - 12:00pm, we will be meeting with Faculty and Staff from typically underrepresented or historically marginalized backgrounds. This session will be open to faculty and staff who self-identify as being from any racial, ethnic, gender orientation, language, age, nationality, or ability. Based on the nature of this meeting we will determine whether more specific follow-ups may be warranted. Please mark your calendar with the meeting information if you are available and interested in attending. As with all listening sessions, we recognize that this time will not accommodate all schedules but are hopeful that some of you may be able to join. There is no specific agenda. The session is primarily intended to allow us to engage in general discussion and to have a shared opportunity to discuss the COE experiences of individuals from an array of identities. The Zoom link for this meeting is https://uoregon.zoom.us/j/9921791979. In the event you are unable to attend or if you have thoughts you'd prefer to share in writing, feel free to use the COE Community Listening Session survey<https://oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2m0pktzQAKFArWe>.
* Faculty Performance Evaluation window: The faculty performance evaluation window kicked off last week. All faculty under evaluation will receive communication about their upcoming review. Faculty performance evaluation resources are available at https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coepersonnelsupport/faculty-resources/faculty-evaluation-and-merit/
* Recognizing Faculty through Honors & Awards: In collaboration with the Office of the Provost, the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation seeks to identify and recognize faculty who receive honors and awards that are nationally prestigious or highly regarded in their academic disciplines/fields. Many of these honors are critical to our institutional rankings and status in AAU. To accomplish these goals, Research Development Services (RDS) created and published new resources that:
* Offer a centralized resource<https://research.uoregon.edu/honors-awards?check_logged_in=1> for support and recognition of honors and awards, including robust lists of honors and awards by discipline across career stages
* Describe RDS services and resources<https://research.uoregon.edu/plan/findfunding/honorsandawards/honors-awards-services-and-resources> for faculty seeking nominations or nominating others
* Provide a list of current and emeritus faculty<https://research.uoregon.edu/node/551176> who have received honors as identified by the Top American Research Universities and UO leadership
In order to be able to keep accurate records and celebrate faculty achievements, we ask that faculty who have received a prestigious honor, fellowship, or award in the last year inform the OVPRI and Provost offices using this notification form<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/app.smartsheet.com/b/form/46677fe8eddd40f19932470d7fa3c48d__;!!C5qS4YX3!BTpPKhC1-nuMivyM29I4zz3f2N1Cge3IoeZsXruC9AiZ0z6n9M5oOx4sfScQgjWMTBLeNDsSYGljBgKVQK8obF9OcU4$>.
They aim to help build a culture of faculty nominations, as well as provide infrastructure to reduce the administrative burden for folks seeking to nominate or be nominated. Faculty who are interested in nominating themselves or others to the National Academies of Sciences, Medicine and Engineering<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.nationalacademies.org/__;!!C5qS4YX3!BTpPKhC1-nuMivyM29I4zz3f2N1Cge3IoeZsXruC9AiZ0z6n9M5oOx4sfScQgjWMTBLeNDsSYGljBgKVQK8ozd7v-OQ$>, American Academy of Arts and Sciences<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.amacad.org/__;!!C5qS4YX3!BTpPKhC1-nuMivyM29I4zz3f2N1Cge3IoeZsXruC9AiZ0z6n9M5oOx4sfScQgjWMTBLeNDsSYGljBgKVQK8oH2mRaV4$>, American Association for the Advancement of Science<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.aaas.org/__;!!C5qS4YX3!BTpPKhC1-nuMivyM29I4zz3f2N1Cge3IoeZsXruC9AiZ0z6n9M5oOx4sfScQgjWMTBLeNDsSYGljBgKVQK8o5p3INAI$> or other prestigious honors contact RDS (rds at uoregon.edu<mailto:rds at uoregon.edu>) for support.
