coe-staff: The Weekly Vol. 4 #5

Dear COE community,

I write today knowing that some within our community may be feeling the news of the earthquake in Turkey not as a distant tragic event, but as a real and present, tangible pain. Our community stands together as we watch in sadness the successes and sorrows of the rescues that are still underway. Each new tragedy hits in a different way for each of us. Frankly, I struggle with knowing when to acknowledge this, as well as having the perfect words to say. At times like these, we all stumble in our shared humanity.

For those of you interested in reaching out to help, there are many agencies engaged in supporting the efforts, please be sure to go through a trusted entity, while the COE cannot endorse any specific agency, this resource may be of interest https://time.com/6253346/turkey-earthquake-syria-how-to-help/ . Beyond financial or physical support, we can also support our friends, colleagues, neighbors, and our local and distant community by remembering that the pain (and conversely joy) of these national and international events are not calculated by miles or distance. Indeed, these emotions live within each of us and can exist here...only a few doors away.

Please join me in a show of support, kindness, and care.

Warmly,
Laura Lee

Reminders:

  * Call for Scholarship Application Review Committee: The College of Education's Development Team is responsible for distributing almost $1 million of donor-funded scholarship annually to incoming and returning COE students who have applied for COE scholarships. To award scholarships based on academic merit, the College depends on a systematic review of these applications by a committee comprised of faculty and/or staff. Service on this committee counts as college-wide faculty service. And the commitment timeline is short - requiring the review of 30 to 40 brief applications over three weeks in the second half of February and into March. Please contact Andrea Olson, Director of Stewardship and Donor Relations at andreao at uoregon.edu<mailto:andreao at uoregon.edu> to express your interest in serving on this committee or to gain more information by February 10.

Accolades:

  * Kudos to Leslie Leve, Maria Schweer-Collins and Elizabeth Bates, whose article, Cognitive Control Biases in Depression: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis<https://psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2023-41359-001.html>, was featured in the APA Editor's Choice, "the most exciting new findings in psychological science selected by APA Journal Editors."

  * Read the just released landmark evaluation of Protect Our Children<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.tfff.org/mobilizing-oregon-communities-prevent-child-sexual-abuse__;!!C5qS4YX3!GsUAgPIFyIMtaci6_1VgDAlsfz4FJ6oco1yG6OGidNkzpB5HjSzbCdEnpmrrBjPEv3phZ1CvvmpEUYhlJWL1$>, the child sexual abuse prevention training program that has helped build a movement of advocates across rural Oregon and Siskiyou County, California. Findings overwhelmingly show that the program increased knowledge and behaviors critical for sustaining efforts to prevent child sexual abuse. This release is orchestrated by The Ford Family Foundation, in partnership with the Center for Prevention of Abuse and Neglect (CPAN) and the 19 participating POC sites across Oregon.
