Dear COE faculty and staff,
I recently listened to an Academic Impressions podcast<https://www.academicimpressions.com/rethinking-role-service-promotion-tenure-podcast-series/> from UO's very own Gabe Paquette, Vice Provost of Academic Affairs. In the podcast, Gabe spoke about the importance of defining service and understanding the disproportionate impact that service often has on women faculty and faculty of color. This disproportionate service may derail important career advancement and promotion opportunities. I was heartened to hear Gabe speak about the UO's work on dismantling inequities surrounding service and enjoyed learning more about the work of the university senate task force<https://senate.uoregon.edu/senate-motions/us2122-23-creation-service-dashboard-department-policies-and-requirement-minimum>. Although the work is ongoing, we will soon have some concrete tools for faculty and academic leaders to use to help define and measure service and better plan for equitable loads. Moreover, our focus on service will allow us to recognize (and celebrate) this important work, which is necessary to support students and the institution. If you have 32 minutes to spare, check out the podcast<https://www.academicimpressions.com/rethinking-role-service-promotion-tenure-podcast-series/>. It's a fascinating listen and may shed some light on larger conversations that are happening on our campus, and campuses nationally. If you've contributed to this work, either through the senate taskforce or through other mechanisms, I thank you! Your important contributions make our collective work better, more meaningful, and more equitable.
Beyond my thinking about service, improving transparency surrounding work loads, and improving overall climate and morale in our college, I've been spending considerable time thinking about our student experience in the COE. I'm delighted to share that Dianna Carrizales-Engelman, assistant dean of administration and equity and inclusion, and I are holding several sessions with students to better understand their experiences and needs as they study, learn, and grow with us in the College of Education. We will be meeting with International students this week and COE GEs next week in an informal and supportive environment that is intended to create bridges between the COE dean's office and our students. Although it's important to be responsive to needs, my hope is that the Dean's office can be proactive and open to conversations before challenges arise.
I'm open to other ideas from faculty and staff on improving communication, cultivating a sense of shared purpose for our work, and supporting student, faculty, and staff success. Keep your ideas coming. I love hearing from you.
Thank you for being part of our COE team.
Warmly,
Laura Lee
Announcements:
* We are in Institutional Hiring Plan (IHP) season. The IHP<https://provost.uoregon.edu/ay2023-24-institutional-hiring-plan> is a single plan detailing all approved tenure-track searches for the following year's hiring cycle. This year's IHP process will result in the creation of the 2023 IHP, which will designate the tenure-track faculty searches for the 2023-24 academic year. Between now and mid-January, faculty will work with their departments to discuss tenure track needs and priorities. Departments will develop proposals that will be discussed with the department head council and COE Dean. After discussion and vetting of proposals at the department head council, the COE Dean will submit IHP proposals to the Office of the Provost by February 3, 2023. More information about the process and timeline can be found on the provost's website<https://provost.uoregon.edu/ay2023-24-institutional-hiring-plan>.
* Student and classroom photos: The COE Communications team is continuing to rebuild its supply of in-classroom photo and video assets now that students are back on campus! If you would be willing to allow a photographer into your classroom to capture photos of willing students (including a cohort photo if you desire!), please complete this interest form<https://oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_diiaa7IcdpgFfpk> and a member of the Communications team will reach out to you for further coordination.
Reminders:
* Survey of COE Professional Resources for course content: As you may recall from our October faculty and staff meeting, the COE is hoping to identify ways to expand certain student content offerings across the college by considering pooling access to resources and offering content to students across departments and programs. While there are several content areas that are likely to have cross-college appeal for COE students, at this time our focus is on content in the area of either (a) equity and inclusion or (b) higher education professional preparation (CV writing, developing concept papers, research skills). The Survey of COE Professional Resources (2022)<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3PpxjRMcX333Nky__;!!C5qS4YX3!B5Q5-JJMrJ8Ljf8vP08A4wmyjpwFn6urH51FojNg3dlT7MThtQUgIDj7N4B_P3Eba8A1RmINdyneWfvvubszBtM$> located here is intended as an inventory of resources and interest, and does not obligate any faculty or staff at this time. Once an inventory of COE resources is compiled, we will use the information to identify a way forward -- with interest in considering opportunities for future quarters and to having a partially implemented option by Fall 2023. Interested faculty and staff, please complete by Monday November 14th, 2022.
