Dear Faculty and Staff,
As many of you know, the annual Ducks Give<https://ducksgive.uoregon.edu/giving-day/56968/department/56972> campaign is tomorrow - May 12th, 2022. We hope this campaign inspires you<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnJIWGxtXYw> and other members of our community to give back to the COE in support of student scholarships in a number of programs, services in the HEDCO clinic, and so much more. I am grateful to be working with an amazing development team led by Kristi Schneider with support from Andrea Olson and Celeste Christie, and we are hard at work engaging with our alumni and friends of the COE in partnership with you. Among other things we are seeking endowments for programs in our COE that support persistently underrepresented students, and are looking for ways that the passion of our donor community can transform the work we do. Ultimately philanthropy matters because it allows us to be more equitable and just in our recruitment and student training, and provides opportunities for community partnerships, clinical services, and research that would not be possible without the generous support of our donors. Last week we met with COE Advisory Council, a group of established donors who work with the COE in fundraising and philanthropic efforts. Collectively this group of committed and engaged people have contributed millions to our COE to support students, faculty, services, and facilities. The chair of this group, Bart Rickett (CEO of the Oregon Division of Lease Crutcher Lewis) will be joining us for our June faculty meeting for a few minutes to discuss some exciting structural changes we have made to this group to ensure more representation of our community and enhance our DEI efforts. I'm grateful for the leadership Kristi Schneider and team has demonstrated in our development efforts and can't wait to share more about our work. For now, I would like to express my appreciation to each of you - faculty and staff - who make this COE special. I am inspired by you. Thank you for allowing me to step into the role of the interim dean and serve you.
Warmly,
Laura Lee
Accolades:
* Jerry Rosiek was selected as the 2022 recipient of the Graduate Education Excellence Award for Outstanding Graduate Mentorship<https://graduatestudies.uoregon.edu/academics/policies/faculty-staff/excellence-awards#:~:text=Excellence%20Award%20for%20Outstanding%20Graduate%20Mentorship>. This award, given out annually by the UO Division of Graduate Studies, recognizes outstanding mentorship of graduate students and celebrates faculty who foster the academic and professional development of students. This award affirms that strong mentorship is an essential component of strong graduate programs, and recognizes a faculty member who excels in the areas put forth by the Office of the Provost to define mentoring. Particularly, we asked nominators to address nominees' strengths in providing mentorship that is culturally responsive, network-based, reciprocal, and adaptive.
* COE Lecturer and recent EMPL graduate, Ross Anderson, has been leading the makeSPACE project and just received a new early phase Education Innovation and Research grant to extend the work. During the pandemic, more than 200 Oregon K-12 educators joined the makeSPACE project<https://www.makespaceproject.org/>, expanded their creative capacity, and reinforced their well-being and resilience. Recently published research in a Frontiers in Education<https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/feduc.2022.848005/full> article and a Teaching and Teacher Education<https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0742051X21003085> article provide details about these findings and the teacher experience. As that first federal grant enters its final year, Anderson's local research and design consulting group, Creative Engagement Lab<https://creativeengagementlab.com/> has teamed up with Children First PA and the School District of Philadelphia (SDP) to broaden the reach of makeSPACE through a $4 million U.S. Department of Education, Education Innovation and Research grant. Over the next 5 years, the makeSPACE for Agency and Readiness Project will reach 240 7th and 8th grade SDP teachers and 3,500 students with drama-based learning strategies, providing a rigorous evaluation across 16 schools.
* Angel Dorantes is featured on the Listen, Learn, Act<Listen,%20Learn,%20Act> website for his role as the first faculty advisor of The Latinx Males and Allies Alliance (LMAA), sponsored by the Division of Equity and Inclusion. The LMAA creates cultural programming, organizes activities, helps students find academic resources, and provides leadership and networking opportunities. Continue to visit the Listen, Learn Act pages where each month they will highlight some of the work being done to combat racism and the resources available here on campus.
