Dear Faculty and Staff,

We are now over half-way through Black History Month and, in my view, this date is a reminder to rededicate ourselves to celebrating and expressing gratitude for the innumerable contributions that Black communities have made to the well-being of all of us, and our society. Personally, I take inspiration from my treasured opportunities to query and learn from African American luminaries (e.g., Marian Wright Edelman) during my time in Atlanta.

For our students, who may not have enjoyed such privilege, the listing provided by the Southern Poverty Law Center<https://www.splcenter.org/news/2022/02/15/black-history-month-facts-people-quotes> for #BlackHistoryMonth 2022 may be informative. There, students will find an accessible chronicle of the contributions made by Black scientists, authors, journalists, athletes, lawyers, and activists. Marian Wright Edelman’s oft cited quote about the value of the work we do – education – is also included, “Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.”

For the contributions of the Black community, my deep gratitude is life-long but a month is a good start for any of us.

Regards,

Randy
