Dear Faculty and Staff,

The Council of Academic Deans of Research Education Institutions (CADREI) held its annual meeting in Portland this week. CADREI represents many doctoral-granting institutions, which represent a subset of 200 or so of the approximately 1,400 colleges or schools of education in the U.S. The agenda was far ranging. Session topics included budgeting, enrollment management, critical race theory, and a new deans institute was also held. One of the sessions was particularly well attended and engaging.

Kartik Athreya, Executive Vice President and Director of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, provided a broad overview of decades of economic and social science research on racial and ethnic education, career, and income disparities in the U.S. Although the individual study findings were familiar, the compilation of findings across disciplines of inquiry, developmental level, and varied life outcomes generated considerable interest, questions, and rebuttals.

Unfortunately, we were asked to not share slides from the presentation, which were numerous and thought provoking. We are allowed to share three of the links to a small sampling of readings cited in the presentation.

Public financing of education and outcomes: Herrington 2015 RED.pdf - Google Drive<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/drive.google.com/file/d/0BzcM-QsVUSzuZUxKc29zY2FEYlk/view?resourcekey=0-atFoYJigySVYE4VVi0IWWA__;!!C5qS4YX3!XS1YZ2K_ienSlSiSu-SMCTQ2HPEVf9Uo3wvbQNhpDnTmcxben7OB4A0NSju01Opj$>
Student preparedness for higher education: College Dropouts Linked to Preparedness More Than Effort (edweek.org)<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.edweek.org/teaching-learning/college-dropouts-linked-to-preparedness-more-than-effort/2011/06__;!!C5qS4YX3!XS1YZ2K_ienSlSiSu-SMCTQ2HPEVf9Uo3wvbQNhpDnTmcxben7OB4A0NSshesSXO$>
A study of outcomes for KIPP: Who Benefits from KIPP? - Angrist - 2012 - Journal of Policy Analysis and Management - Wiley Online Library<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/pam.21647__;!!C5qS4YX3!XS1YZ2K_ienSlSiSu-SMCTQ2HPEVf9Uo3wvbQNhpDnTmcxben7OB4A0NShlbyMVA$>

The outcome of the presentation most interesting to me was the demonstration of long-term interest within the federal reserve system in addressing disparities in childhood. I was heartened to learn of their long-standing search for economic policy changes that can effect significant change in life outcomes for African-American students in particular.

Wishing all a good week,

Randy

Accolades:

  * Our CDS students, donors, and faculty were presented awards at the Oregon Speech-Language and Hearing Association conference:

  * Ziru Bolen was awarded our Student OSHA Award/Bob Buckendorf Scholarship. This award is presented to one student from each program in recognition of their outstanding academic and clinical performance and service to the program and the field.
  * Bill Anton, as part of the Scottish Rite, was awarded the Professional Advocacy Award. This award "honors a person who has contributed to the advancement of the visibility, viability, or vitality of our professions. Potential nominees include legislators, philanthropists, SLPs, SLPAs, Audiologists, or any public figure who has shown outstanding advocacy for our professions". Our program is grateful for the tireless work and advocacy Bill has led the Scottish Rite to do in pursuit of access to speech and language services for children and youth throughout the state. His leadership in securing funding for services, camps, telehealth and technology is invaluable!
  * Karen Durany was elected as the incoming OSHA Secretary for the upcoming year.
  * Samantha Shune received the award for Outstanding Teaching. This award "recognizes a colleague whose teaching (professional preparation or continuing education) has contributed to advancing clinical knowledge and/or practice in the fields of speech-language pathology, audiology, or education of the deaf/HOH".
Congratulations, to all, on these recognitions.

  * Nichole Kelly, Elizabeth Budd, and Nicole Giuliani's article " If you want to support the health and wellness of kids, stop focusing on their weight"<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/theconversation.com/if-you-want-to-support-the-health-and-wellness-of-kids-stop-focusing-on-their-weight-168062__;!!C5qS4YX3!WF0iYqtSfRwsnjzhOZQNkpCP6SYldciy21bbBmMX93aSZ_Ep6cqgnWl8BM9eyDoHYl_Raw$> was just published in The Conversation. This work has been cited by news outlets nationally and globally - an outlet in the Philippines just today. The impact of this line of research is just beginning. I wish Nichole, Liz, and Nicole continued success.
