Dear Faculty and Staff,
As you know, the quality of the meetings we attend is quite variable - an understatement. The AAU Deans meeting I attended last week in Washington, DC was most rewarding - an accolade. The speakers held impressive qualifications, garnered our attention with stimulating and relevant content, and the deans were fully engaged. In person and remote participation by deans was also high, representing private and public universities, all regions of the country, and at least one Canadian university.
Even more impressive is the fact that we adopted an action item for the upcoming year, with enthusiasm. A presentation by a higher education equity and inclusion expert led to a discussion of the many structures we have for gatekeeping in higher education. This concern led to a discussion of "what counts" as scholarship in this age of an expanding array of digital outlets and new measures of research impact (e.g., downloads). The outcome of this discussion was the appointment of a writing group to guide us through the process of revising our local promotion and tenure guidelines as a collaborative.
I've asked Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann, Assistant Dean for Administration, Equity, and Inclusion to work with Chris Murray, Associate Dean for Faculty Development, John Seeley, Associate Dean for Research, and all of you to revisit our promotion and tenure guidelines (tenure-related and career-track) in tandem with the efforts of AAU colleges and schools of education. You will be learning more about this effort early next year.
Regards,
Randy
