Dear Faculty and Staff,
Dr. Ben Clarke appointed Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL)
I made the following announcement to the CTL employees and affiliated faculty yesterday. The CTL<https://ctl.uoregon.edu/> has over 20 full time employees in addition to numerous faculty affiliates, and the unit stewards a multimillion dollar research and development portfolio. Practical and well-validated products created and disseminated by the CTL staff and faculty include: KinderTEK, NumberShire, and Progress Monitoring-Spanish-Individual Growth and Development Indicators (PM-S-IGDIs). The CTL has a storied history and unlimited upside potential. I am eagerly looking forward to watching the CTL faculty and staff realize their potential.
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Ben Clarke, Ph.D., Associate Professor, as Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2021. Ben has done an outstanding job of ensuring the continuity and growth of the CTL in a matter of months at the helm as interim director. He has stabilized CTL's fiscal status, retained personnel, and facilitated the development and submission of numerous grant proposals. Most important, Ben has garnered the confidence of all of us in his leadership and reassured all CTL internal and external stakeholders that CTL's future as a premier national education research leader is bright.
Ben is ideally qualified for this appointment. He has more than a decade of experience as a highly successful faculty researcher in CTL, three years of experience as a tenure-line faculty member in the Department of Special Education and Clinical Sciences, and broad and deep experience as a director of federally funded research grant projects.
I have full confidence in Ben's leadership and look forward to watching your collective accomplishments unfold in the years ahead. I have high aspirations for CTL, grounded in my confidence in the CTL staff and affiliated faculty.
Please join me in welcoming Ben into this new role.
2022 Institutional Hiring Plan (IHP)
This year's IHP has been announced and the our participation in the process was discussed by our academic department heads last week. All documents associated with the IHP are attached to this email and available at this public website (https://provost.uoregon.edu/ay2022-23-institutional-hiring-plan). The introductory pdf document provides the following overview of the IHP:
* The 2022 Institutional Hiring Plan (IHP) will designate the tenure-track faculty searches that will occur in the 2022-23 academic year. The IHP will be developed through a collaborative process. This process begins with our faculty, involves discussion between the provost and individual deans, and concludes with feedback from advisory groups including the deans and the Provost's Faculty Hiring Advisory Committee*. There will be two types of proposals for this year's IHP: traditional and those tied to the Provost's Strategic Initiative on Environment or the Provost's Strategic Initiative on Sport & Wellness (see Evaluation Criteria section for details). The provost will then finalize and announce the IHP, which will detail all approved tenure-track faculty searches.
* All final decisions related to the IHP are the responsibility of the provost.
* Diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential to the mission of the university, and as such are foundational in all of the work we do. As is reflected in the criteria section below, IHP proposals will again be expected to address diversity, equity, and inclusion, and will be evaluated on that basis.
Our department heads engaged in a robust discussion about our prospects for the upcoming competition. As a reminder, we were approved for only one TTF search in each of the last two years. I am committed to doing better this year, however, there was consensus that, given the low probability of success, submitting large numbers of proposals in the previous two years was not effective, nor respectful of the amount of faculty time devoted to proposal development. Accordingly, I plan to submit a maximum of four TTF IHP proposals to the Provost for university-level consideration.
EMPL Program Review
The process of reviewing EMPL programs and the department is continuing. I have held group meetings with EMPL full-time faculty (N=7), individual meetings with these faculty, one meeting each with academic department heads and COE deans, a meeting with the Faculty Advisory Committee, and two meetings with the Office of the Provost. I wish to express my gratitude to all faculty and stakeholders for engaging in this process and improving my thinking. After all, this process is disquieting because it was launched in response to lagging metrics. My goal is to provide some closure about future directions for the faculty, staff, and academic programs in the coming weeks - prior to new student admission season.
It was a beautiful day in Eugene, our students, faculty, and staff had great fun at the quarterly Doughnuts for Ducks event, and my preview of new drone footage collected by our communications staff portends stunning video for our website (see social media accolade).
I hope that each of you find some moments to enjoy the evening.
Randy
