Dear Faculty and Staff,

This week’s edition is devoted exclusively to accolades, which is appropriate for this celebratory time leading up to graduation. Today, for example, I have the honor of announcing three new endowed faculty appointments.

I am pleased to announce that Professor Lisa Mazzei has been appointed as the Alumni Faculty Professor of Education, Laura Lee McIntyre as the Castle-McIntosh-Knight Professor, and Leslie Leve as the Lorry Lokey Chair. All three appointments will commence on September 15th. Lisa, Laura Lee, and Leslie have forged extraordinary careers that exceed the university criteria for such appointments, which are:

• “An outstanding record of productive research, publication, creative activity, and scholarly achievement appropriate to the discipline and areas of specialization and sufficiently consistent in quantity and quality to support a reasonable expectation of continued outstanding performance and contribution
• Evidence of a continuing record of exemplary academic and professional accomplishment
• Evidence of achievement of a professional status at the national or international level which will enhance the prominence of the University”
Please join me in congratulating Leslie, Laura Lee, and Lisa.

These announcements also provide the opportunity to celebrate the work of our development group. Kristi Schneider, Deidre Sandvick, Andrea Olson, and Celeste Christie work in relative anonymity to raise and steward funds for faculty, staff, and student support. These faculty appointments are a direct result of their skilled and committed efforts. These announcements also provide an opportunity for me to express my gratitude to the faculty committee members, also working without fanfare, who worked carefully to make candidate recommendations for these endowed positions. Thank you!

Wishing everyone a good remainder of the week and weekend,

Randy

Accolades:

  * Samantha Shune was featured in the article “The Pursuit of an Impossible Food”, an OSU publication (attached). Great work, Samantha!

  * Laura Lee McIntyre was listed among the top 100,000 scientists in the world across all fields according to a composite citation index, placing them in the 2% most influential scientists in their fields. Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators (plos.org)<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/journals.plos.org/plosbiology/article?id=10.1371*journal.pbio.3000918__;Lw!!C5qS4YX3!XlEtEy9Q48BYcbPKfg6IzB7pOMqOn62M0AM01m42BiomSI5a8jrjyMN5o6Ke-yYvT4E$>. That is quite the recognition, congratulations!

  * Jenny Ruef and Sarah Stapleton provided advice for helping children return to school<https://around.uoregon.edu/content/college-education-faculty-offer-tips-returning-k-12-classes?utm_source=ato05-19-21> in Around the O. It’s a good read. Thanks, Jenny and Sarah for helping children, schools, parents, and families navigate this uncertainty.

  * It is with great pleasure that I announce the promotions of Beth Harn and Hank Fien to full Professor; Nichole Kelly, Ilana Umansky, and Samantha Shune to Associate Professor with tenure; and Associate Professor, Cengiz Zopluoglu was awarded tenure. As you know well, these career milestones take many years of preparation, hard work, and dedication to the academy. Please help me in congratulating these individuals on their promotions.

  * After a year hiatus, Ducks Give 2021 took place last Thursday and was a huge success for the U of O and COE. With over $1M raised by more than 1,400 donors to support 51 challenge gifts across campus, below is what the COE was able to accomplish with the help of our incredible faculty, staff, alumni, and donor community.

Amount raised for COE: $164,569 ($39,142 day of)
# of donors: 138
All 5 challenge gifts unlocked:

  * McKay Sohlberg CDS challenge to raise funds to offer free books and fees to students from underrepresented populations in the CDS master’s program
  * Tasia M. Smith Excellence Scholarship challenge for COE students from underrepresented populations and/or first-generation students
  * Gray & Golden Sapsik’ʷałá challenge supporting scholarships for Indigenous students
  * COE Scholarship challenge for general COE scholarships
  * Ken Erickson Scholarship Fund challenge to support students in EMPL
A huge thank you from the development team to our inspirational challenge gift donors, to the faculty and staff who helped promote Ducks Give to your networks (and who donated!), and to the COE Communications team (Juls Davis & Emily Barker) for the coolest Ducks Give social media campaign ever!
