coe-staff: Denouncing Violence Against Asians and Asian Americans

Dear Students,

Having spent almost 30 years in Atlanta and Georgia, I am particularly saddened by yesterday's murders of Asian individuals. I have great empathy for my dear friends and colleagues from Korea, China, and other immigrant communities that make up that worldly city. This attack is tragic, as are all we've seen reported in the U.S. recently, and it must stop.

I know that tragedies like this make some members of our Asian and Asian-American communities feel vulnerable. You've told me so, which saddens me further. You are, however, more powerful than you know. Your engagement, work, and mere presence in our COE community makes all of us better - better informed and educated, more dedicated to inclusion and tolerance, and inspired to learn more about the world. Your engagement with us is a powerful force for good in our community.

Although we cannot control all of our circumstances, we do control our own college and its culture. I call upon all of us to exert our local control and do whatever we can to enhance the well-being of our Asian and Asian-American colleagues. In the COE, we respect and care for one another.

As we've had to do too often this past year, I remind you of the counseling and other university services available to you. I was hoping that we would not need Kylie Yihua Post so badly, but we do, and I'm glad she's here to support our Asian and Asian-American students, staff, and faculty. Please reach out to her.
