Dear Faculty and Staff,

I look forward to seeing you Friday at our quarterly meeting. Please plan to attend. Among other guests, Vice President Alex-Assensoh will be joining us.

I also wish to call your attention to Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann’s DEI committee update of earlier today. The considerable thoughtfulness of the committee is reflected in her message. We owe much gratitude for the work of this group.

This evening, we are holding the inaugural meeting of our newly constituted Community Diversity Advisory Board (CDAB). I look forward to meeting the new members and learning from them, and introducing the membership and their work to the college community. For those of you who are new to the college, the CDAB charge is given in our bylaws as:

Community Diversity Advisory Board (CDAB) consists of community members, the Dean, the Associate Deans, and the Executive Assistant to the Dean. The Dean provides direct oversight of this committee. Charge: To provide counsel and recommendations to the Dean regarding the COE’s efforts to improve diversity and promote inclusivity within both the COE and the broader educational and social service community.

Until Friday,

Randy

Updates and Upcoming:

  * Winter Faculty and Staff Meeting: Our winter faculty and staff meeting is this Friday, March 12 from 1:30-3:30pm. The agenda is attached.

  * COE Building Access Update: The HEDCO building will be locked during the week of spring break -- Monday March 22nd – Friday March 26th. Individuals with key cards may still access the building as needed. Please continue to use the Unanticipated or Irregular Visits to Campus Survey<https://oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0Go9Zizro3uvzlX> when making unscheduled trips to buildings in the COE complex.

  * Student Emergency Fund: This is a very important expansion of student assistance. This ARTICLE<https://around.uoregon.edu/content/5-million-pledge-creates-new-student-emergency-fund> also helps academic leaders gauge when and how to access these funds on behalf of students. I look forward to supporting our students better as a result of this new funding.

  * A Message from the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC). A special invitation to education faculty and students for a free workshop on Smarter Balanced Tools for Teachers<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/smartertoolsforteachers.org/__;!!C5qS4YX3!W7_ADaGbeEzQW7qegJjJa4ucfEC0YOq9E-CiDncA63Rltwm3kMApJVnsmnjuBmUI$> and its utility for educator preparation programs. This new resource features standards-aligned lessons and activities created and used by educators. Please complete this brief registration survey<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/ucsantacruz.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9p0H7uMCHkrZinj__;!!C5qS4YX3!W7_ADaGbeEzQW7qegJjJa4ucfEC0YOq9E-CiDncA63Rltwm3kMApJVnsmvcChctx$> by Friday, March 12, if you are interested in attending. The proposed dates are March 23 and 24, and the survey will ask that you indicate your preference. Tools for Teachers is available free to educators and higher education partners in Oregon through a partnership between the Oregon Department of Education and the Higher Education Coordinating Commission.

     * Tools for Teachers provides access to a variety of resources that teachers can use to support student learning, including:
        * Lessons and activities with built-in accessibility strategies that can help teachers support students’ varying needs and preferences.
        * descriptions of grade-level expectations to help teachers monitor progress.
        * Formative strategies to help teachers identify where students are in their learning, where they are going, and how they will get there.
Accolades:

  * The What Works Clearinghouse™ has released a new practice guide<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/ies.ed.gov/ncee/wwc/PracticeGuide/26__;!!C5qS4YX3!SUVA90jX_H_pCsgghnYgupygzGG9GRHfPN0OP3T-m1vAxXfP6W4FZ9txInY9UUhe$> on assisting students struggling with mathematics in grades K-6. A panel of experts including educators in both mathematics and special education distilled recent, rigorous intervention research into six practice recommendations for educators. The guide can help educators tailor their math instructional approaches and small-group intervention programs and will also be useful to math specialists, math coaches, district and state personnel, and parents. Our own Ben Clarke served as one of the lead authors on the newly released IES practice guide.

  * A total of 17 students will be receiving funds as part of our doctoral conference registration fee awards. Awards were given on a first come, first served basis during the application period. After the application period closed, we rolled over any remaining funds and any students who applied for multiple awards were then eligible for additional funding. We were able to provide funding to all students who applied. I wish our students rewarding experiences.
